  • Superannuation Guarantee
  • 0.6 to 0.8 FTE
  • Rewarding career with a progressive organisation
  • Flexible working arrangements

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

Use your organising and leadership skills to drive the Hunter Community Alliance Strategic Plan with a team of diverse community and organisational leaders. This will include partnering with member organisations and especially the Steering Committee and the Interim Leadership Council.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively develop relationships with leaders of community and organisations in the Hunter region.
  • Work within the Organising Cycle framework and Hunter Community Alliance principles to plan and execute campaigns and events that achieve specific objectives. This involves consulting with, supporting and sometimes leading (in a virtual rather than organisational sense) member organisations and/or other partners.
  • Build and maintain a stable, high performing organisation that all members can be proud of. This will involve:
    • effectively managing Hunter Community Alliance contributors, teams, and volunteers; assisting them to achieve individual and organisation objectives
    • building and maintaining relationships with member organisations
  • Coordinating and delivering training throughout the year in the program of Community Organising Foundations.
  • Communicate Hunter Community Alliance activities and achievements to all members and the wider community.
  • Contribute to and inspire discussions about building a stronger civil society in the Hunter. Examples include writing, or organising opinion pieces for newspapers; speaking at conferences; and attending various government and public service meetings.
  • Manage the financial activities of the organisation and keep the Steering Committee and your direct supervisor alerted to changes that will impact either budget or funding expectations. A part-time accountant assists with this work.
  • Attend Steering Committee and Interim Leaders Council meetings and various committee and team meetings. These meetings involve member organisations and other partners working on campaigns; they can occur out of office hours. It is important to be available to attend meetings out of hours sometimes.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Experience in ‘organising’ (as per the Hunter Community Alliance, or Sydney Alliance model), or experience in a related field with the ability and willingness to learn and use community organising practices.
  • Experience in building an organisation. If no direct experience, knowledge of what it takes and the potential/maturity to understand the issues and manage them
  • Leadership presence. The candidate is relational and engaging when meeting with other leaders, and in turn commands attention because of their style, charm, intelligence, and/or emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to influence a wide variety of people they have no authority over. The audience is wide and varied from politicians to refugees; from bureaucrats to religious communities; from union leaders to young people.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring others. Direct staff management experience is highly considered but the capacity to be a leader in a variety of informal situations is equally important.
  • Proven ability to proactively develop relationships with a diverse range of people and leaders.
  • Experience with listening to communities, building leaders in communities and involving them in decision making.
