Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) is a community controlled Public Benevolent Institution delivering human services and social enterprise activities for the benefit of Aboriginal people from the Alice Springs Town Camps, urban Alice Springs, and Central Australia.

First incorporated in 1979, the organisation was a finalist in the 2016 Reconciliation Australia, Indigenous Governance Awards and is one of the 10 largest Aboriginal Corporations in Australia.

The Opportunity

The Tangentyere Youth and Community Safety (YCS) Division brings together a range of programs and services for young people. This includes the Brown Street Youth Service, Town Camp Youth Hubs and Youth Outreach Service providing afterhours programs to young people on Town Camps and in Alice Springs. The YCS Division is increasingly working in an integrated fashion, ensuring staff and programs work together to provide holistic services for young people to achieve positive outcomes in education, safety, and wellbeing. This means that staff, including the YCS Food and Nutrition Officer, are working across program siloes to provide client and placed-based focused services that are flexible and responsive to needs.

The role of YCS Cook is responsible for providing meals to young people at our programs that are of a high standard in quality, nutritional value, and of interest to the young people. The YCS cook will ensure safe food preparation practices and maintain the kitchen and its equipment to Territory and National Food Safety Standards and regulations and provide education and guidance to YCS Staff around food preparation and delivery.

The YCS cook is a crucial role that supports healthy eating and education in our programs with a focus on nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation and budgeting. The YCS cook will plan and contribute to menu development, recipe refinement and prepare bulk meals five days per week for Tangentyere’s youth programs according to the recipes and quality standards. They will ensure food safety and sanitation procedures are strictly followed, monitor inventory levels and ordering supplies as needed.

As part of your role, you will be working with children, people with a disability and people who are vulnerable. It is your obligation to always ensure their safety and report any concerns in line with our duty of care obligations. We have zero tolerance when it comes to abuse of any kind and will take disciplinary action, including and up to termination of employment, should we determine that abuse has taken place or there has been a failure to report any suspected or alleged abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and cook meals for the Tangentyere Youth Programs.
  • Procurement of all food and supplies in accordance with menu and budgets.
  • Ensure the kitchen is kept clean and safe in line with Territory and National food safety standards.
  • Supervise the 3 Brown St Kitchen as the certified NT Food Supervisor.
  • Facilitate cooking workshops with young people.
  • Ensure accurate and detailed reporting requirements are met.
  • Works collaboratively in the team.
  • Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

  • Previous experience in food and meal preparation, commercial kitchen, or cook experience.
  • Basic literacy, numeracy, and administration skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and organise workload.
  • Ability to plan and run food programs and engage youth.
  • First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
  • Current NT Drivers Licence, NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desired

  • Holds Food Safety & Handling certificate (and willingness to obtain).
  • Holds SITSS00069 food safety supervision skill set or willing to obtain.
  • Previous experience supporting people youth, older people and/or people with disabilities.
  • Ability to understand or speak one or more Aboriginal languages.
  • An understanding of Aboriginal culture as well as a broad range of contemporary issues affecting Central Australian Aboriginal people.
