The TLC is a for-purpose (not-for-profit), apolitical, science and community-based organisation that protects nature on private land in Tasmania. Through science, community, and enduring commitment, we inspire and empower people to conserve nature in Tasmania; we do this for the benefit of current and future human generations and for nature itself.
We conserve important habitats and ecosystems by raising funds to buy and manage private land and by working with landholders to protect nature on their land.
Tasmania has a wonderful natural heritage with over 50% of the state already protected by magnificent reserves. We are superbly placed to develop one of the world's leading protected area systems - a reserve system that provides sufficient habitat for the long-term survival of our biodiversity.
The TLC strategy is to build a system of secure core areas managed for conservation. Our aim is to conserve and manage an additional 30,000 hectares of land for nature conservation by 2025 through reserves and through management for conservation.
Some land becomes TLC reserves, protected by conservation covenants. Other land goes into our 'revolving fund': it is permanently legally protected with a conservation covenant and resold to conservation-minded buyers. The TLC also works with landowners to protect the ecological values of their properties through conservation programs including the Midlands Conservation Fund, Land for Wildlife and WildTracker. In 21 years of operation, the organisation has protected more than 96,000 hectares through our activity.
The Reserve Officer works within the reserve management team to implement the active management and maintenance of TLC's land estate. This is a practical role that requires the ability to work in remote and isolated situations. The role is field-based and as such the incumbent will be required to spend up to three consecutive nights per week at locations across Tasmania.
The position is responsible for field based reserve management activities such as fire management, road maintenance, invasive species control, rural fencing and access control.
We are looking for a diploma (or higher) qualified candidate with relevant experience in practical conservation or natural resource management. We want someone with an understanding of nature conservation principles and practices, with well-developed interpersonal skills.
The position on offer is ongoing, part time (80% FTE = 60.8 hours / fortnight), and based in Hobart or Launceston, Tasmania. The TLC provides a flexible work environment where a good work-life balance can be maintained.
A remuneration package is offered based on TLC Level 2.1 - 2.3 ($70,602 - $80,017 per annum pro rata plus statutory superannuation) commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience. The commencement rate for this position is between TLC Level 2.1 - 2.2.
