Position Overview:

The Production Editor is responsible for managing the production of editorial content for the Law Institute Journal and other publications (LIJ news briefs, annual report and other bespoke publications) in print and online.

The Production Editor oversees the editing, proofreading, design and print production processes from commissioned copy to publication, ensuring deadlines are met and the content is of high quality and consistent with house style. 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Proactively progress print and digital content from commissioned copy through to copyediting, design and print production.
  • Ensure all interim and final deadlines are met, proactively identifying and remedying potential delays.
  • Copy edit in line with house style and co-ordinate other subeditors/proofreaders, as required, ensuring final copy is of high quality and meets publication standards.
  • Compile journal sections and write/edit headlines, standfirsts, etc.
  • Oversee journal pagination and flatplanning.
  • Anticipate production problems and setbacks, actively flagging them with the Publications Manager.
  • Engage and develop relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and suppliers to develop effective collaborative relationships.

To be considered for this role, you will demonstrate: 

  • A relevant degree in Communications, Journalism or Publishing, taking in editing, writing and digital communications.
  • 7+ years of publication production experience (magazines or journals preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of publishing processes, both print production and online.
  • Excellent demonstrated grammar and copyediting skills, including for web and SEO.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and fact checking skills.
  • Proficiency with Adobe CS applications, in particular InDesign and Acrobat Pro.
  • An eye for layout and design and the ability to think visually and creatively.
  • Familiarity with productivity tools, such as Monday.com or Trello desirable.
  • Experience with the legal profession and justice system desirable.
  • Proactive, effective and confident communicator.
