OVERVIEW

Transparency International Australia (TI Australia), the Australian chapter of the world’s leading non-governmental anti-corruption movement, is seeking a Project Coordinator/ Project Officer located in Melbourne, to work within its Accountable Mining Programme.

TI Australia has led the Accountable Mining Programme for the global Transparency International movement since 2016, working in over 20 countries. This programme seeks to achieve real change in combatting corruption in the mining sector. The Project Coordinator/ Project Officer will primarily be working on implementing the project: Increasing Knowledge and Governance of China’s Global Mining Sector while supporting the development and growth of the Accountable Mining Programme.

We are seeking a motivated and highly organised individual with exceptional skills in research and project management and excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal to coordinate the project implementation, while supporting the growth of the programme as a whole. The successful candidate will have experience in engaging a diverse range of stakeholders, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. They will be highly motivated, able to work in a small team, and willing to take on a diverse range of responsibilities. Experience working in the not-for-profit sector would be advantageous.

The Role

The Project Coordinator/ Project Office, Accountable Mining Programme will drive the implementation of the project Increasing Knowledge and Governance of China’s Global Mining Sector and support the implementation of other workstreams within the programme.

The objective of this project is an improved understanding and relationship with the global Chinese mining sector, collaboration with a variety of stakeholders and supports mining sector governance everywhere that is transparent, accountable and participatory, promotes gender equality, and ensures the social and environmental interests of current and future generations are protected.

The Project’s short-term objectives are to improve knowledge and understanding of civil society and communities about the Chinese mining sector, particularly those in the Global South connected to extraction sites. To improve relationships with key Chinese mining sector actors, to support the engagement with companies operating outside of China and to support improvements in ESG standards and community engagement in particular. To increase transparency, integrity and accountability of Chinese mining companies involved in critical minerals, particularly those operating in Zimbabwe and Indonesia.

The Programme will achieve these outcomes through two key strategies: Knowledge Generation and Dialogue and Engagement. Our work in these areas will involve generating new evidence to build the Global South’s understanding of China’s global mining sector, developing stronger relationships through engagement with Chinese mining companies and supporting the adoption of international standards by Chinese mining companies.

Key Duties

Working with the Accountable Mining team in TI Australia, the Project Coordinator/ Project Officer will perform the following duties:

  • Coordinate programme implementation and reporting and support for other Accountable Mining Workstreams.
  • Work with the Research and Programme Manager to identify and pursue dialogue and engagement with key Chinese mining sector stakeholders such as CCCMC, RCI, CREF, China Non-ferrous Metals Industry Association, relevant mining companies and others, including via policy development and research, developing advocacy materials and organising workshops, events and meetings, both domestically and internationally.
  • Work with the Research and Programme Manager on the design and development research activities, including policy, national level case studies, strategic research and practical resources, training and workshops and other knowledge products;
  • Update new and existing policy, research and advocacy materials and coordinate translation into Mandarin.
  • Liaise with participating TI Chapters for the development of national level assessments of mineral commodity value chains; and delivery of dialogue and engagement workshops.
  • Provide assistance to maintain relationships and collaboration with key Programme partners such as the EITI, NRGI, World Economic Forum, the OECD and others;
  • Engage with Chinese mining companies and industry associations and initiatives to secure their participation in project activities under the guidance of the Research and Programme Manager.

Key Competencies

To be successful in this role, the Project Coordinator/ Project Officer will have:

Required skills

  • An advanced university degree or professional qualifications in a relevant field, e.g. law, international development, business or social sciences.
  • Experience in working in policy, knowledge, or program delivery roles in a relevant area, such as corporate accountability or responsible business conduct. Familiarity with anti-corruption and business integrity is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Chinese business practices and context. Engagement with the Chinese private sector and experience working with Chinese mining companies operating internationally would be an advantage.
  • A proven ability to communicate effectively in written and oral settings. At Project Coordinator level, experience in the development and communication of evidence-based advocacy messages, delivering presentations and external meetings.
  • Required qualifications include fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Proficiency in spoken Mandarin is essential, and fluency is highly desirable.

Desirable skills

  • Experience working in the natural resource sector (with mining sector experience a distinct advantage).
  • Experience in engaging stakeholders from the private sector with experience with mining companies and industry associations and initiatives (nationally or internationally) a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in project monitoring and evaluation and grant writing is desirable.
  • Experience working on multi-country research projects and initiatives will be highly regarded.
