General Manager - Gibson Desert North

Tjamu Tjamu (Aboriginal Corporation) RNTBC

Kiwirrkurra People invite you to help them operationalise their vision to look after people, community, country and places of cultural importance. Tjamu Tjamu (Aboriginal Corporation) RNTBC (Tjamu Tjamu PBC) is seeking a new General Manager to implement the strategic plan.

The Kiwirrkurra native title area is in the tali / sandhill country in Western Australia. Kiwirrkurra Community is one of the most remote and isolated communities in the country, a 700kms drive from Alice Springs along mainly rough gravel roads. The country is pre-dominantly looked after by those in Kiwirrkurra Community, but those with connections to the country live all over – Walungurru, Alice Springs, Balgo, Nyrripi, Haasts Bluff, north, south, east, west.

Kiwirrkurra and Pintupi People have many stories of self-determination – walking back to their home (mainly from Papunya) in the 70s and 80s, helping start dialysis in Kintore and Kiwirrkurra through Purple House in 2000, having one of the first native title determinations, managing their land as an Indigenous Protection Area in 2014 and taking on the Leases of the Aboriginal Reserves in 2018. The successful candidate will make a major contribution to the continuation of Kiwirrkurra People’ self-determination.

Tjamu Tjamu PBC is a small, but quickly growing organisation, operating in difficult circumstances with some significant resource constraints. Kiwirrkurra People have amounted the strongest control over the determination area compared with other First Nations people in Western Australia and are keen to leverage these into real benefits. Tjamu Tjamu PBC’s strategic plan is focused on 5 themes – Land, Culture, Rangers, Community/social and Organisation.

The role is predominately executive management with some operational work. There are many great projects which will require the close attention of the General Manager. Tjamu Tjamu PBC currently has one full time and many casual (locally engaged) employees. The role requires a significant amount of time in Kiwirrkurra, working with Directors and Common Law Holders on the operationalising of the strategic plan. The strategic plan has five main focuses - Land, Culture, Rangers, Community/Social and Organisation.

This is a challenging role. The complexities of developing a small organisation with large existing responsibilities, working across significantly different cultural perspectives, and dealing with resource limitations are compounded by the remoteness of the country. You will need to be a person who likes problem solving, a high level of autonomy while also being able to lead and work constructively in a team building consensus around actions. The role offers work with a high degree of purpose, and opportunities for adventure in some of the remotest parts of the country.

You will need to be a person who values relationships and spending time with Kiwirrkurra People, including spending a significant amount of time in community and on country (minimum 25%). Outside the core work, there is scope for the successful candidate to demonstrate their strengths and work with Kiwirrkurra People on their numerous project ideas to care for country, strengthen family connections and maintain their culture.
