This is a frontline conservation position supporting the highly successful community-led protection program of marine turtles on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. The role will also assist other threatened species and ecological community conservation projects throughout Cape York Peninsula.
The Western Cape Turtle Threat Abatement Alliance (WCTTAA) has been successfully delivering a marine turtle threatened species recovery program on the Western Cape since 2015 with assistance from Cape York NRM. The main objective of the program is to protect nests and give hatchlings a chance to get to the sea. The program has seen predation of critical nesting populations of Olive Ridley and Flatback turtles reduce from 100% on some beaches to below 30% on all beaches. This means tens of thousands more hatchlings getting to the sea. Monitoring the changes in pig predation on nests became so successful that the project became one of six demonstration sites under the National Feral Pig Action Plan. This role will help WCTTAA coordinate feral pig control to reduce predation of nests and coordinate data collection from land and sea rangers during their turtle monitoring camps on seven beaches along the coast each season.
The selection criteria is listed in the attached position description.
