About the Treaty Authority

The Treaty Authority is an independent entity with a mandate to facilitate the formation of treaties between the State of Victoria and First Peoples in Victoria. The Treaty Authority’s work is grounded in Aboriginal culture, lore and law and led collectively by a panel of five Members committed to Aboriginal self-determination and empowerment. It engages with a broad cross-section of stakeholders including the State of Victoria, the First Peoples’ Assembly and Traditional Owners in Victoria.

The objects of the Treaty Authority’s work are to:

  • Facilitate the journey towards reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance between First Peoples and other people of the State and to
  • Maintain, promote and advance the self-determination and empowerment, culture and human rights of First Peoples.

About the Role

The Communications and Media Manager helps raise awareness of the Treaty Authority’s role, responsibilities, and programs, including the Treaty Negotiation Framework. This role focuses on implementing a communications strategy to strengthen the Authority’s connection with First Peoples and Traditional Owners in Victoria. The Communications and Media Manager will lead efforts to increase visibility, engage stakeholders, and support the Authority's goals, requiring strong leadership, creativity, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Duties

  • Implement and manage a comprehensive communications strategy, ensuring consistent messaging across all channels.
  • Create and edit content, including reports, media releases, social media posts, and website materials.
  • Manage media relations by responding to enquiries, maintaining relationships with media stakeholders, and distributing media releases.
  • Plan, create, and oversee social media content to boost engagement and online presence.
  • Maintain and enhance the Treaty Authority’s branding and messaging across all communications.
  • Promote the Treaty Authority’s vision, advocate for its initiatives, and foster a positive and inclusive team culture.
  • Coach and mentor team members, aligning their work with organisational goals and conducting regular performance reviews.

Selection Criteria

  • Passion for achieving Treaties and commitment to First Peoples' communities and causes.
  • Strong understanding of First Peoples' cultures, with extensive experience working with their communities.
  • Relevant tertiary degree and significant experience in a similar role are advantageous.
  • Ability to foster a culturally safe and productive workplace.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to various audiences.
  • Strong program management experience, delivering strategic objectives and projects.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and domestically.
  • Proficiency in media monitoring, social media management tools, and experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Creative, strategic thinker with strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
  • Adaptable and resilient in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively.

This is a full-time permanent role, based at our offices in Collingwood.

This position is commensurate salary band VPS5 starting at a salary of $106,534 plus SGC depending on the successful applicant’s experience.
