Job Overview:

The TWU is one of Australia’s leading campaign unions. Representing thousands of workers in road transport and aviation, the TWU has won some major breakthroughs to lift pay, conditions and safety across these essential industries. These include world-first legislation to set minimum standards for road transport workers including exploited food delivery riders, rideshare drivers and AmazonFlex couriers in the gig economy, defeating Qantas in the High Court over the illegal sacking of 1700 workers, and initiating the campaign for Same Job Same Pay rights which have now become law.

As a member of the Victorian & Tasmanian Branch, the role of the Communications Officer is vital in providing support to the communications and campaigns teams in order to achieve the objectives of the union. This role takes a lead on digital and member communications, media, and creates visual content through graphic design, member information bulletins, photography and videography.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work with leadership and organisers to create and execute communications plans to support campaigns, collective bargaining and recruitment
  • Work with leadership to develop, implement and report on a digital communication strategy, including a comprehensive social media calendar, to expand our online reach, grow our audiences and increase engagement
  • Collaborate with communications colleagues around the country to deliver the national communications strategy
  • Develop member-led communications materials, videos and photos
  • Generate proactive and reactive media stories and coordinate media events
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists
  • Utilise analytics tools to regularly monitor and evaluate digital communication
  • Stay informed on digital tools, trends and algorithm changes and brief the team
  • Create member-driven content through attendance at site visits, meetings, training and events to meet members, take photos and video footage including interviews
  • Monitor and ensure compliance at all levels with the TWU brand guidelines
  • Ensure our communications accurately reflect and uphold TWU’s brand values
  • Work with suppliers to create TWU merchandise and branded materials

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

  • Experience in social media, comms and marketing
  • Strong design skills, photo and video skills
  • Proven skills writing for different audiences
  • Experience working to communications strategies
  • Experience working with media and generating media stories
  • Qualifications in communications, media, campaigns or similar field desired
  • Creativity and attention to detail
  • An interest in human rights
  • A self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Good IT skills, experience with Canva and/or Adobe desirable
  • Proactive & enthusiastic in approach to work
  • A strong commitment to labour values
  • A positive work ethic
