The Water Well Project is a not-for-profit health promotion organisation based in Melbourne. Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers by improving health literacy. Our vision is that all individuals from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds achieve equitable access to healthcare to enable them to live full lives and contribute to the wider community.

The Health Educator is responsible for assisting in the provision of The Water Well Project’s health education sessions to communities of a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, as well as providing some technical support to The Water Well Project team.

The health education sessions covers a diverse range of healthcare topics; from the risks and precautions associated with COVID-19, how to maintain physical and mental health during the pandemic, as well as sessions on diet and exercise, mental health and navigating the Australian healthcare system (to name a few). Sessions are currently being delivered both online and will slowly re-transition to being delivered face-to-face over the coming months. Sessions are highly interactive and interpreting services are provided where necessary.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities associated with the role include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating health education sessions working in conjunction with current healthcare professional volunteers to people and communities of CALD background. This will include sessions online and face-to-face in the greater Melbourne area.
  • Observing sessions to capture questions and capturing evaluation of sessions (and their delivery) as well as feedback on the needs of CALD communities;
  • Collating feedback and generating reports as required by committee and other stakeholders
  • Assisting with development of content for topic templates and guides for volunteer facilitators
  • Representing The Water Well Project to external organisations as required.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Qualifications in an AHPRA accredited healthcare discipline.
  • Previous experience in conducting training and/or facilitation.
  • Proven track record in health promotion communications (written and verbal).
  • Understanding of the Australian healthcare system and its resources
  • Ability to work independently, as well as alongside volunteer healthcare professionals and a volunteer management team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to deliver healthcare sessions.

Renumeration and conditions

  • 38 per week (1.0 FTE) with flexible working hours across the week (part time is negotiable). This role may be divided into multiple part time FTEs totally 1 depending on calibre of applicants and their availability.
  • This role has an hourly rate of $30 - $32 per hour (based on qualifications/ experience) plus superannuation
  • There may be occasions where after hours work (including on weekends) may be required
  • Fixed term position until mid-March 2022
  • 3 month probation period
  • The successful candidate will need a valid Working With Children Check
