About the United Firefighters Union of Australia – Aviation Branch
The UFUA Aviation Branch is a trade Union that protects the rights and entitlements of 808 professional aviation firefighters located at all 27 major Australian airports. Formed in 1974 as the Federal Firefighters Union, the Aviation Branch is now a branch of the National United Firefighters Union of Australia. Our members are professional career firefighters and officers who work for Airservices Australia, a Commonwealth Government business corporation. Airservices provides air navigation and rescue and firefighting services for Australia’s aviation industry.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a law degree and or practical industrial relations experience. We are seeking a self-motivated candidate who is committed to protecting the economic, social, political and industrial interests of our membership. This role will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to develop their industrial relations skills and contribute to the interests of enhancing public safety.
Key responsibilities & functions:
- Providing members with industrial and WHS advice
- Attending industrial meetings with the employer and other unions
- Experience negotiating Enterprise Agreements under the Fair Work Act
- Preparing communication for members in relation to the union’s industrial activities
- Providing support for workplace and public industrial campaigns
- Assist in the development of submissions for Parliamentary Inquiries, Senate Inquiries, Coronial Inquests, etc.
- Building and maintaining effective working relationships with elected Union Officials
- Given the urgent nature of 24/365 emergency services work, understand the requirement to provide services to UFUA members in an expeditious manner
- Preparation and advocacy of matters in the Fair Work Commission
- Drafting of documents including claims, applications, statements, and enterprise agreements
About you:
To be successful in the role, you must possess the following essential attributes:
- Previous experience as an Industrial Officer or working within a Trade Union
- Demonstrated commitment to the principles of trade unionism
- Tertiary degree in Law or demonstrated experience in industrial matters
- An ability to work autonomously
- Ability to be flexible and work as part of a small team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritise tasks and work in a time sensitive environment
- Well-developed research, analytical and problem solving skills
- Capacity to gain and hold ROE Permit (Commonwealth)
