About StandBy Support After Suicide

StandBy Support After Suicide is Australia’s leading suicide postvention program dedicated to supporting people and communities bereaved and impacted by suicide. StandBy was established in 2002 by United Synergies (now Youturn Limited) and operates across Australia. StandBy has significant expertise in the provision of postvention support in a range of contexts and is nationally and internationally recognised. In 2021, StandBy expanded to reach national coverage, providing all Australians with access to postvention services.

The opportunity

The Program Manager will work extensively with the General Manager - StandBy in a critical role delivering the strategic direction of the StandBy program. You will use your knowledge and experience in suicide postvention service provision to oversee a range of operational and staff management duties including:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of strategic priorities.
  • Provide direct line management and support to the StandBy’s state/territory teams and partner organisations under the guidance of the General Manager - StandBy.
  • Ensuring that those with lived experience of suicide are at the centre of the organisation’s service delivery. 
  • Proactively support Youturn to comply with all licensing and regulatory obligations, and the delivery of program outcomes. 
  • Ensuring that operational guidelines, policies, procedures and training, are implemented, maintained and regularly reviewed through a practice framework model. 
  • Supporting team members and holding them accountable in embracing a culture of service excellence and professionalism.
  • Engagement with partner organisations to develop effective relationships.
  • Establish and deliver upon operational priorities and initiatives. 
  • Providing extensive contribution to the development and management of internal and external service delivery and regulatory compliance frameworks including budgetary management, resources allocation and the compilation of statutory and organisational reports.

What will you need? 

Essential 

  • An understanding of and experience in suicide postvention service provision and associated issues, bereavement and/or related disciplines such as trauma, grief, and loss. 
  • A high-level understanding of National Health Reform Agreement, and Mental Health and Suicide Prevention National Agreement.
  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline (e.g. health field, social sciences, business management, policy) or equivalent years of experience; and 
  • At least five years’ experience in a related field, including senior management expertise.

Other requirements

  • Must hold a current open 'C' class drivers licence
  • Hold a Blue Card issued by the Public Safety Business Agency
  • Youturn requires all its workplace participants to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an approved COVID-19 vaccine, according to up-to-date health advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) or a State or Federal Government; or provide a valid exemption certificate.

Selection Criteria 

Below is the essential (unless otherwise indicated) demonstrable experience a person requires to successfully fulfil the responsibilities of this position: 

  • Demonstrated experience in managing large-scale projects or programs in suicide prevention, mental health, community/public health environments.
  • Knowledge and understanding of key policy documents/direction including National Health Reform Agreement, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention National Agreement, Productivity Commission’s final report into mental health, National Suicide Prevention Adviser’s final report and Gayaa Dhuwi Declaration.
  • Demonstrated budgeting and financial reporting acumen.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage relationships and networks of internal and external stakeholders to positively influence outcomes. 
  • Excellent interpersonal partnership management skills, with experience managing governance and meeting structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, to prioritise, meet deadlines and see projects through to completion, on time and within budget.
  • A proven ability to manage contract negotiations, delivery, and reporting.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication.
