About the role

  • Permanent full-time 38 hours per week in Riverina Hub located in Wagga Wagga
  • Lead a team of dedicated pastoral care staff in Southern NSW with weekly travel to Tumut and regular travel to Griffith & Berrigan

Uniting is seeking to call a Chaplain to lead the Riverina Pastoral Practice team including Tumut, Berrigan, and Griffith aged care centres. The Chaplain is involved in pastoral and spiritual care including staff team oversight throughout the wider Hub with weekly travel to Tumut and regular visits to Griffith & Berrigan.

There are 3 main aspects to the role:

  • Providing pastoral and spiritual care for Uniting residents, families, and staff
  • Oversight and coordination of the Hub spiritual care team, which comprises Pastoral Practitioners (all part-time) working across numerous facilities.
  • Involvement in the life of the Presbytery and connecting with local congregations to promote Uniting’s ministry and develop pastoral volunteers.

The Chaplain is also expected to lead worship, where required, across Uniting’s services.

Essential Criteria

  • A Diploma or Degree in Theology or Ministry or Community Services/Development.
  • Ordained as Deacon of the Uniting Church; or a Minister of the Word of the Uniting Church; or a suitably qualified lay person (eligible to apply for Ministry of Pastor) of the Uniting Church. 
  • Evidence of Chaplaincy training of at least 2 or more units of completed Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent.
  • NSW Drivers licence or ability to attend required sites within Uniting Sydney regions.

Experience

  • This is an independent role typically requiring 2 or more years’ experience in ministry, chaplaincy or community services/development.  
  • Demonstrated experience in a community setting and a comfortability with mental health issues, addiction, and homelessness.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the Uniting Church and its polity, its structure, systems and processes.
  • Understanding of spiritual pastoral care issues relating to people in our care.
  • For those Chaplains working outside Uniting settings such as hospitals, mental health, rehab, police, prisons etc, specialist skills and experience as required within the specific setting.
  • Demonstrated theological leadership and an ability to ensure the understanding of people across the organisation in the Mission of the church and promoting Uniting’s theological principles in practice.
