The Rowden White Library (The Rowdy)

The Rowden White Library is a contemporary recreation library for all students at the University of Melbourne with a significant history that spans 85 years.

The library and its services and bookable spaces are now supported by new surrounds designed across two levels in the Student Pavilion with recreational balconies to both levels.

The diverse collection of books, comics and graphic novels along with eBooks and eAudiobooks are complimented by gaming computers and a state-of-the-art VR room.

This library is unique on campus, it’s a place for students to relax and engage with services aligned to recreational activity delivering quality experiences that make a difference. This library is where you do not study.

Role Spotlight

As the Senior Library Officer role you will deliver responsive library services and targeted programs to appeal to the libraries diverse membership that inspire and engage the student community.

This role will maintain and develop the library collections and contribute to the development of the library’s policies and procedures and annual operating plan.

Areas of responsibility include managing the Union’s Archives and Library programs.

Core Responsibilities

Library Programs and Service Delivery

  • Develop and implement programs, events, and initiatives for student community engagement with the library collections, spaces, and technologies.
  • Develop organisational relationships to promote the library and to create opportunities for collaboration.
  • Actively lead the promotion of the library programs, events, and initiatives.
  • Measure, evaluate and report on program outcomes as required.
  • Prepare the Library for opening and or closing (as required).
  • Oversee the security of the library resources.
  • Advise on and participate in the cataloguing of Library materials.
  • Operate and administer the Horizon automated system, including software installation, maintenance and prepare reports.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of Authority records in the library.

Collection Development

  • Contribute to the selection and acquisition of Library materials.
  • Collection development responsibilities in maintaining, ordering, and developing the Fiction and Non-Fiction collections shared responsibility.
  • Participate in original cataloguing of all Library materials.
  • Actively participate in collection development and associated policy.
  • Identify items for withdrawal and preservation in accordance with the Library’s Collection Development Policies.

Archive Management

  • Coordinate and administer correct records management procedures for the organisation’s general archival requirements.
  • Effectively communicate archiving responsibilities to the organisation and oversee the collection management of archive material.
  • Facilitate internal and external requests to access archives adhering to Collection Policy guidelines.
  • Drive and manage the archive project in accordance with the future digitisation of the collection for broad access.

Your Expertise (Need to Have)

  • Tertiary qualifications in Library and Information studies or other relevant field or work-related experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and / or experience.
  • Eligibility to join the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) - Associate membership and
  • Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).
  • Demonstrated experience in collection and archive management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and communication skills with the ability to work independently and effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated skills and commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of interpreting and applying library guidelines, practices and procedures and experience working with automated library systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design and delivery of complimentary library programs and workshops that show current and emerging technology trends and how they can be utilised within a library setting.
  • A valid employee Working with Children Check (WWCC).

Bonus Points (Nice to Have)

  • Knowledge of Desk Top Publishing (DTP) programmes
  • Event management experience
  • Knowledge of marketing and communication
