Job Summary

Anti-Slavery Australia, at the University of Technology Sydney, is recruiting for a Research Fellow to support the Department of Social Services funded project, Sexual violence and forced marriage prevention 2024-2028. This ambitious, ground-breaking ‘Speak Now’ project first began in 2020, with the objective of strengthening consent-based decision-making, awareness, knowledge and communication around the issue of modern slavery in the family and household setting, with a particular focus on forced marriage in Australia.

Detailed Description

Anti-Slavery Australia (Anti-Slavery) is dedicated to eliminating modern slavery in Australia. The Centre is based within the Faculty of Law and engages in research, policy development, and evaluation of Australia’s modern slavery responses and related issues. Anti-Slavery has an active role in community awareness raising of all forms of slavery and also provides access to legal advice for survivors of modern slavery through the engagement of JM Burn Solicitor. The Centre provides practical legal training for graduating law students as well as internship placement opportunities for law students engaged in law elective subjects.

The successful candidate will be under supervision of Professor Jennifer Burn AM; Law Professor and Director of Anti-Slavery Australia. The Research Fellow will be responsible for ensuring the project is conducted in accordance with ethics approvals as well as supporting project management, fieldwork and working with the project team to undertake research, writing and contributing to project reports and academic articles, and applying research learnings to project activities. The Research Fellow will also participate in events and external engagement activities of the project.

About you

  • A PhD Degree in Law or in a related field, or equivalent expertise
  • Knowledge of modern slavery, forced marriage and servitude
  • Proven ability to effectively manage research projects
  • Skills in undertaking research to both generate new knowledge and apply findings to real world problems
  • Demonstrated track record of conducting and publishing high-quality research

Remuneration & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $121,566 to $143,880 pa (Level B) pro-rata

This position is part-time 0.8FTE (4 days per week) and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis until June 2028.

This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.
