The Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council (WAITOC) is the not-for-profit member body for the WA Aboriginal tourism sector and its global market. We create the foundation for strong, resilient, and sustainable Aboriginal tourism businesses in WA.
In 2030, WA is the world's best First Nations tourism destination driven by a self-determined and highly capable Aboriginal tourism industry and supported by WAITOC's member capacity building, business support and infrastructure.
WAITOC empowers its members to embrace their cultural identity in order to honour and respect their ancestors and elders, both past and present.
Operating as two different organisations under the WAITOC brand, the Board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of WAITOC and its charitable arm Aboriginal Tourism Western Australia (ATWA). As a governing board, it guides and directs, sets performance goals, ensures corporate compliance and management accountability, endorses strategic plans and approves operating budgets. The Board ensures that WAITOC has the resources necessary to achieve goals and outcomes on behalf of its members.
Our 10-member Board is made up of Aboriginal leaders representing different regions in the state, supported by two non-Indigenous independents, based on skill requirements. Board members serve a 3- year term, which may be extended to a second term. We are currently seeking one Director to join the board in early 2025.
Members are appointed based on individual backgrounds and expertise, in addition to an empathy and understanding of the Aboriginal community and tourism sectors. Each Board member is committed to the ongoing success and growth of the organisation in WAITOC’s role as advocate for the growth of the Aboriginal tourism sector.
WAITOC works to create positive social and economic outcomes by developing Aboriginal tourism leaders. We market Aboriginal businesses, advocate and provide mentoring, administrative support and some essential funding to assist with developing business capacity. ATWA works to attract diverse investment funding to support these activities.
Please refer to our website and annual report, for more general information.
We welcome people of diverse gender, age and cultural backgrounds to apply to join the Board.
If you have substantial experience in one or more of the below areas, you are encouraged to apply.
A nominal sitting fee is provided for board meetings, and travel costs are covered for face-to-face meetings as required.
Dependent on interest, the appointment may be subject to an interview with the Chair and another Board member, plus the successful outcome of enquiries with professional referees.
