The Wayside Chapel

The Community Cafe Chef is to establish and maintain the high standards and consistency of the food prepared and served throughout the entire Café. The Community Cafe Chef is responsible for cost management within the kitchen.

You will work across a range of shifts across the week, with some weekend work required. Location will primarily be in Potts Point with the occasional shift in Bondi Beach. You will work a minimum of 2 shifts a week from 3pm to 9.30pm on weekdays and 8am to 4pm on weekends.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

General

  • Menu planning and food preparation;
  • Ordering of foodstuffs and other supplies as required;
  • Stock control and management of storage facilities;
  • Maintenance of food service standards and cleanliness in kitchen and café food preparation areas;
  • Management of café records and kitchen budgets;
  • Liaison with suppliers and donors; maintain existing key partnerships and build new partnerships as required;

Preparation and Service Delivery

  • Actively involved in menu development and maintain updated and accurate costing of all dishes prepared and sold in the Heart café
  • Check food preparation lists for each shift.
  • Train and supervise kitchen staff while working through food preparation lists as required
  • Ensure knowledge and practice of Food Safety techniques, storage and labelling at all times.

Workplace Health & Safety

  • Supervise kitchen staff ensuring that staff maintain and promote a safe working environment adhering to Wayside Chapel’s WH&S policies and procedures
  • Ensure health and hygiene standards and food service accreditation are maintained according to NSW Health Guidelines;
  • Comply with legislation and all Wayside WHS policies/procedures and instructions, reporting any hazards or safety issues and performing all tasks in a manner which guards against risk to self and others within the workplace.

Other

  • Any other duties as directed by the Manager or equivalent role
  • Undertake training as required and directed
  • Practice and promote appropriate self-care at an individual, team, and organisation-wide level.

Work Health and Safety

  • Accountable for complying with legislation and all Wayside WHS policies/procedures and instructions, reporting any hazards or safety issues to your manager, and performing all tasks in a manner that guards against risk to self and others within the workplace.
  • Undertake risk assessment and safety plans in collaboration with People and Culture

Core Competencies

Essential

  • Qualifications in commercial cookery, commercial kitchen management, chef training or equivalent experience, and holds a current Food Safety Supervisors Certificate
  • Sound knowledge of the food industry including at least 3 years working as a head chef in a busy café environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage risk and ensure a safe working environment
  • Sound financial management skills and ability to manage rosters and kitchen budgets
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to engage with people at all levels
  • Experience identifying skills gaps and providing on the job training and supervision

Desirable

  • Experience in working in a start-up or new café environment;
  • Tertiary qualification in adult education or equivalent experience; and
  • Exposure to, or experience working in, the not-for-profit community sector
