About the Role

wayss provides the Homelessness Access Point in the Southern region for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. wayss is seeking an enthusiastic person with experience in managing a busy reception area to take on the position of Reception at our Homelessness Access Point, based in Dandenong.

The Access Point is where people experiencing or at risk of homelessness access services via the Initial Assessment and Planning (IAP) team. The reception worker is often responding to the needs of vulnerable people in immediate crisis with complex needs.

This position is integral to the functioning of wayss, it is the first step of engagement with clients, visitors, external organisations, couriers and contractors. Providing a warm and welcoming face to all who attend the service is pivotal to this role and given the volume of people attending, and the services provided by wayss, it is a highly regarded position and can be fast paced and dynamic.

Reporting to the Access Point Team Leader, the position is a member of the Homelessness Access Point team. As the first contact point for people seeking homelessness assistance or presenting to wayss this position is key to ensuring a positive first engagement.

Duties include:

  • Initial service response for all people attending wayss reception.
  • Obtaining initial information from people attending to ascertain the service response required and where/who this should be directed to.
  • Daily pre-arranged appointments- contacting relevant staff member to advise their client or visitor has arrived via Microsoft Teams.
  • Accurate record keeping of client information across required information platforms.
  • Accurate maintenance of all administrative functions and record keeping.
  • Monitor front of house area including reception and CCTV coverage of external front of building for safety including behaviour that may impact on reception environment.
  • Monitor wellbeing of all people in reception area and respond/alert designated staff when concerns arise.
  • Other reasonable duties as requested.

About You

You will have:

  • An excellent customer service manner with strong verbal communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the causes and effects of homelessness and the needs of and issues affecting persons who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Clear understanding of the issues and needs facing people who are homeless and marginalised including Alcohol and Other Drug, mental health, disability, family violence, legal issues etc.
  • Strong motivation to engage effectively with people experiencing homelessness to facilitate positive engagement with wayss services.
  • Relevant experience working in the community services sector or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond quickly and provide effective customer service in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proven aptitude to relate positively and confidently with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Sound working knowledge of Microsoft office, including Microsoft Teams and ability to use standard office equipment, computer systems and software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously under limited supervision.
  • Sound decision making ability and capacity to respond effectively to team responses that meet client needs.

This role requires a current Driver’s Licence and valid Working with Children Check. The candidate will need to have successfully completed wayss’ pre-employment screening and a police check.
