About the Dhurrawang Aboriginal Human Rights Program (DAHRP)

DAHRP is a program within Canberra Community Law which is an independent community legal centre.  DAHRP provides legal advice to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live in Canberra and the surrounding regions regarding ACT public housing, social security, and race discrimination.

DAHRP is culturally competent and informed by the human rights principles of participation, inclusion, and self-determination.  We assist clients to access housing, obtain repairs to their housing, with their social security issues and challenge race discrimination through a culturally informed practice that utilises human rights laws and principles in advocacy, law reform and community education. The DAHRP team includes two Aboriginal lawyers, a paralegal and supervising solicitor.

DAHRP is seeking an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cadet who is committed to social justice and human rights, who is in either their 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of their law degree and can manage their time to work one full day (7.5 hours) per week with the DAHRP team. The cadet will have the opportunity to learn about client intake, document management, advocacy, law reform and contribute to the development and delivery of community human rights education.

During the cadet’s time with DAHRP they will:

  • Develop their communication skills;
  • Under supervision, help clients with practical problems;
  • Learn how to apply the law to individual circumstances;
  • Gain significant experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

You will be closely supervised and supported in this role.

Canberra Community Law considers that being an Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under subsection 42(d) of the Discrimination Act 1991 (ACT).

This is a paid position for 12 months with the possibility of an extension until the candidate completes their law degree. Your hourly rate will be $36.47.

All applicants will be assessed against the selection criteria and in person interviews will be conducted. The successful candidate will be required to complete a 3-month trial period and will need to hold a Working with Vulnerable Person Card.

Please call 02 6218 7900 with any enquiries about this position.
