About Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) 

Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) is the peak body and leading policy advocate on young people’s issues in Victoria. YACVic’s vision is that the rights of young people in Victoria are respected, and they are active, visible and valued in their communities. YACVic is an independent, for-purpose, member-driven organisation that represents young people (aged 12–25 years) and the sector that works with them. YACVic provides additional targeted advocacy and services through our key services, YACVic Rural and the Youth Disability Advocacy Service, and our auspice partner, the Koorie Youth Council. 

About YACVic Rural   

Funded by the Victorian Government, YACVic Rural increases the YACVic’s presence across the Great South Coast and Southern Mallee regions and expands our state-wide advocacy and support for young people in rural communities and the rural youth sector. YACVic Rural operates from offices in Melbourne, Warrnambool and Swan Hill. 

YACVic recognises that young people and sector professionals in these areas face particular challenges and offer specific insights that differ to their metropolitan counterparts. YACVic Rural works to support both young people and the youth sector through targeted delivery of YACVic core services to regional and rural Victoria. 

About the project and the role

This project will recruit and train young Peer Educators to support young people to understand Victoria’s new affirmative consent legislation reforms, including the different forms and common misconceptions of sexual violence. As an Affirmative Consent Peer Educator, your role will be to design, facilitate, and stage affirmative consent education across a variety of community settings for local young people, key influencers, and organisations.

You will be supporting young people to understand affirmative consent, at community events, consultations and forums targeting young people, their parents and relevant organisations. You will be involved in the codesign, facilitation, and evaluation. These events are part of the ‘Yeah Nah’ Project, delivering workshops and information sessions across communities in the Mallee Region.  

ABout YOU

Essential

  • Be available to attend a full week of training in Melbourne from Monday 23 to Friday 27 January 2023. (Accommodation, travel and meals arranged and paid for by YACVic).

  • Demonstrated experience in codesign and cofacilitation of consultations and training workshops for young people; (for example, coaching a sports team or running school leadership workshops).  

  • Demonstrated understanding of appropriate behaviours when working with diverse young people, and a commitment to Victorian Child Safe Standards, and the Code of Ethical Practice for the Victorian Youth Sector.  

  • Understanding of the issues important to rural and regional communities, particularly as they relate to young people’s participation and service for young people across the Mallee.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop positive, collaborative working relationships with a range of stakeholders. strong relationships with peers and others such as colleagues, project partners or community leaders.

  • Clear communication skills including written and oral abilities and good interpersonal skills.

  • Great organisation and administration skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks.

  • Demonstrated understanding and/or lived experience of affirmative consent, including common misconceptions about sexual violence, coercive control, and non-consensual removing of condoms (‘stealthing’).

  • To meet the requirements of the role and support rural youth employment, applicants need to be under 25 years of age. 

Desirable

These skills/experiences are not essential, but we would love to hear about them if you have them.  

  • Lived or learned experience of youth cohorts who often face marginalisation (including but not limited to, rural and regional, disabled, Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander, LGBTIQA+, multicultural, OOH care and youth justice young people).  

  • Current Drivers Licence.
