The Role:

We are seeking a dedicated Social Worker (Youth) to be responsible for forming relationships with young people in youth detention and supporting their successful transition outwards and into the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attend the youth detention centre (at least 1 – 2 times per week) to build rapport and provide support to young people – you familiarise yourself with young people and ensure ‘at risk’ individuals are identified and provided appropriate support
  • Deliver neuroplasticity program to young people in youth detention
  • Supervise and engage with youth throughout neuroplasticity program and weekly onsite visits and provide encouragement and guidance to motivate them and promote their overall engagement
  • Identify and address special needs of young people including learning, health-related concerns, physical and emotional needs
  • Attend magistrates court and act as the support person for young people
  • Assist young people in obtaining and completing documentation as required
  • Develop and implement transition plans to support young people transitioning out of youth detention and provide active support in their reintegration into the community (this may include into the Yiliyapinya Indigenous program, TAFE, employment, or school)
  • Offer and facilitate Restorative Justice Program and Mediation services as required
  • Coordinate and attend Cultural Camps and other weekend programs for young people and their families – this includes booking accommodation, sourcing and booking activities, coordinating transportation and facilities and any other items as required
  • Assist in organising meal and beverage requirements, ensuring all participants dietary requirements are met
  • Assist the young people and their families to complete all pre-activity paperwork
  • Oversee the mentoring program to connect young people in youth detention and transitioning outwards with suitable mentors
  • Comply with all occupational health and safety requirements, and complete relevant reporting and record keeping as required
  • Comply with Critical Incident Reporting Frameworks and Child Protection Procedures

The Ideal Candidate:

We are seeking a passionate individual with a strong commitment to Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will possess:

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in youth justice or youth work
  • Current Blue Card, Australian Driver’s Licence and First Aid Certificate
  • As you will be working with vulnerable people, you will be required to be up to date with all vaccinations.
  • Demonstrated experience working with high-risk youth aged between 10 - 17
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and both written and verbal communication
  • High computer literacy
  • Strong organisation, time management and administrative skills
  • Ability to build strong rapport with all stakeholders
  • Culturally safety adherence
