Young Workers Centre

ABOUT YOUNG WORKERS CENTRE

The Young Workers Centre is a young and growing community legal centre and one-stop-shop for young workers who want to learn about their rights at work or who need assistance resolving issues at work.

We are based in Victorian Trades Hall Council, the peak body for trade unions in Victoria. We are a team of lawyers, organisers, educators, campaigners and researchers who empower young people working in Victoria with the knowledge and skills to make their workplaces safer and end workplace exploitation.

We run Victoria’s only specialist employment law community legal centre for young people. We provide legal advice and assistance to Victorians aged 30 and under with issues at work including wage theft and other issues with pay or conditions, dismissals, health and safety, discrimination, bullying and harassment.

ABOUT THE YWC COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT (COM)

The COM is responsible for governance of our community legal centre (Young Workers Centre Inc), and its obligations to regulatory and industry bodies such as CLCs Australia. The COM also advises on YWC programs, campaigns, and strategy.

The COM is made up of representatives from unions, worker advocacy groups, employment law firms, Victorian Trades Hall Council and others with legal & judiciary expertise. Current COM members can be found here youngworkers.org.au/ywcboard.

THE ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As we grow we are looking for COM members with the enthusiasm and expertise (legal, organising or campaigning) to make YWC the most effective advocate possible for young Victorian workers.

The YWC has a unique model as a community legal centre housed within a trade union peak body. We therefore seek a COM member who has an appreciation for the role of community legal centres in advocating for workers as well as a demonstrated commitment to trade union principles.

The COM currently meets bi-monthly (six meetings per year) on a Tuesday evening 5.30 – 6.30 pm.

We seek a member who will:

  • Attend and participate in COM meetings (six per year)
  • Attend and participate in additional planning or strategy meetings as scheduled
  • Be an advocate for the YWC and promote its goals and values to the broader community

We strongly encourage people from CALD backgrounds, First Nations, people with a disability, women and LGBTIQA+ people to apply.

A Statement of reasonable adjustments is available on request for people with a disability.

For inquiries about the role itself, please contact Kelly Thomas at [email protected] using the subject line: Committee of Management Member (Voluntary) enquiry via EthicalJobs.
