We are seeking to employ enthusiastic workers who want to make a difference as Outreach Organisers in the Young Workers Centre, based in Victorian Trades Hall Council.

The Outreach Organisers will deliver workplace rights training to young workers, primarily in secondary schools as well as to universities, youth groups and TAFEs.

The role will focus on increasing young workers’ knowledge of their workplace rights and empowering them to seek support if required.

ABOUT TRADES HALL AND THE YOUNG WORKERS CENTRE

The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is the peak body for unions in Victoria. It provides industrial support for affiliated unions and runs campaigns to promote the interests of Victorian workers.

The Young Workers Centre (YWC) is a community, organising and legal centre that advocates for Victorian workers aged 30 and under.

The YWC outreach team educates young workers about their workplace rights and equips them with the knowledge and tools to deal with wage theft, bullying, harassment, or unsafe work. Outreach organisers also support and organise young workers to run campaigns important to them.

DUTIES FOR THIS ROLE WILL INCLUDE:

  • Delivering workplace rights training to young workers. The Young Workers Centre has a particular focus on delivering workplace rights training to apprentices in TAFEs across Victoria in 2023 and 2024.
  • Travelling regionally, including overnight visits, working after hours and on the weekend as required
  • Liaising with secondary schools, TAFEs and other educational institutions to organise visits to campuses across Victoria
  • Organising activists and young workers to collectively develop and execute campaigns around specific workplace issues or broad-based issues
  • Utilising online and offline campaign tactics to advance young worker rights, for example, street stalls, stunts, phonebanks, social media
  • Identifying, recruiting and supporting activists to participate in YWC events and campaigns
  • Planning and executing campaign actions, events and training sessions
  • Referring young workers who are experiencing issues related to bullying, safety and breaches of their rights in the workplace to appropriate services including the Young Workers Centre’s legal team
  • Utilising online and offline tactics to engage with young workers across Victoria.
  • Dependent on experience, running our Union Winter/Summer paid internship programme 

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

There are no formal education requirements. Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn is most important but our ideal candidate will have:

  • A passion for social justice and a commitment to workers’ rights, youth advocacy and trade union values
  • An understanding of the issues affecting young workers
  • The ability to engage and build rapport with young people quickly, including the confidence to present to large groups of young people for an extended period of time as well as over the phone
  • Some experience in political or community organising within youth organisations, trade unions or student unions
  • Good organisational, administration, and time-management skills
  • The ability to set priorities when faced with competing demands and the flexibility to take on unexpected challenges and changing circumstances when they arise
  • A demonstrated capacity to work well with others in a team environment
  • The ability to work with a range of stakeholders, including educational institutions, unions and regional Trades and Labour Councils
  • Competent skills in IT and social media
  • Current Driver’s License
  • The ability to pass a Working with Children’s Check

MORE INFORMATION

Trades Hall has an attractive collective agreement including a monthly RDO (in recognition of occasional additional hours) and 12% superannuation. The position will be at level 3 ($66,182) or level 4 ($75,637) in our classification structure, depending on experience. The position will be based out of Trades Hall in Carlton.
