About the position

The Aboriginal Youth Mental Health Worker role has been resourced to enhance the capacity of the headspace services and YSAS in collaboration with DDACL to be more responsive to the social and emotional wellbeing needs of young people aged 12 – 25 years from Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander background.

The Aboriginal Youth Mental Health Worker will have the capability to respond primarily through group-based programs, health promotion and limited community outreach to the unique needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula regions.

The position will enhance access for young people to services that support overall health, social and emotional wellbeing, suicide prevention, alcohol and other drug use, promote healthy lifestyle and strengthen cultural identity and relationships with families and community. This program aims to identify the needs of local Aboriginal youth and deliver creative and flexible initiatives addressing their needs.

Some of your key responsibilities will be:

  1. Work flexibly to identify and respond to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their families to improve mental health outcomes.
  2. Create, plan, facilitate and evaluate group interventions to support social & emotional wellbeing for young people, particularly those who are not connected to support services.
  3. Deliver community-based health promotion activities based on the social determinates of health model that provide access to information and resources for young people, families and community.
  4. Provide secondary consultation to internal and external services providers.
  5. Facilitate relationship building between headspace/YSAS services, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), other key Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, community and young people.
  6. Ensure accurate recording of case notes and reports within Organisational timelines and procedures.
