Position Summary
YBM seeks a dedicated Project Manager to lead the enhancement of our Seagrass Monitoring Program. This role will facilitate collaboration among Traditional Owners, rangers, and scientists to map and monitor seagrass meadows, including previously inaccessible sites. The Project Manager will be instrumental in integrating traditional ecological knowledge with scientific methodologies, ensuring the sustainability of seagrass ecosystems and the preservation of cultural values.
Key Responsibilities
- Program Development: Oversee the expansion and enhancement of the seagrass monitoring program, incorporating biocultural indicators and adaptive management strategies.
- Collaboration: Work closely with Traditional Owners, rangers, and scientists to design and implement effective monitoring techniques, including the use of innovative technologies such as underwater drones.
- Training and Capacity Building: Develop and deliver training programs for rangers to ensure they can effectively carry out monitoring activities, reducing reliance on external support.
- Funding Exploration: Identify and pursue external funding opportunities, including blue carbon initiatives, to support ongoing project activities.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain strong communication with all stakeholders, providing regular updates on project progress and incorporating feedback to enhance program effectiveness.
- Data Management: Oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting, ensuring the integration of traditional and scientific knowledge in monitoring practices.
- Reporting and Evaluation: Prepare comprehensive reports on project outcomes and develop recommendations for future management strategies.
Qualifications
- Education: Project Management, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in project management, ideally in environmental monitoring, marine ecology, or Indigenous land management.
Experience
- Experience in project management, preferably within eco-tourism, environmental conservation, or cultural heritage sectors, in this region or in a similar region, or a related field is an asset.
- Ability to work closely with CEO, Traditional Owners, Board and other stakeholders of Yuku Baja Muliku
- Identify and secure funding for On Country projects
- Experience in developing and managing programs.
- Experience in monitoring, evaluating and reporting project deliverables and outcomes.
- Experience in managing teams.
- Experience in grant writing and reporting.
Skills
- Strong understanding of seagrass ecosystems and their ecological importance.
- Proficient in GIS and data analysis software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience in stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with Indigenous communities and respect cultural protocols.
- Familiarity with drone technology and data collection methods is advantageous.

- Full-time position. Main office based at Cooktown, with occasional travel to local and regional sites.
- Work with YBM Traditional Owners and YBM Ranger team to develop and deliver project plans, initiatives, and project outcomes

The Yuku Baja Muliku Rangers are employed by the Yuku Baja Muliku Landowner & Reserves Ltd and funded by the Department of Environment and Science through the Qld Indigenous Land and Sea Ranger Program and the National Indigenous Australian Agency. Yuku Baja Muliku country, Annan River to Archer Point, is located 20km South of Cooktown, Cape York, FNQ. Our traditional lands border two of Australia’s world heritage areas – the Wet Tropical Rainforests ofQueensland and the Great Barrier Reef.
Our country covers 22,500 hectares and the region is rich in cultural sites which are entwined with fringing coral reefs, beaches, rainforests, woodlands, mangroves, saltpans, and sea grass beds. The rich biodiversity of the region includes turtles, dugongs, bennetts tree kangaroos, and striped possums. Furthermore, the region includes some of the most pristine fringing coral reefs in the tropics and it is the convergence zone between the healthy and stable turtle and dugong populations of Cape York and the declining populations to our south. Scope of Position
The Yuku-Baja-Muliku (YBM) people are the Traditional Custodians of Archer Point, which is located 20km South of Cooktown in Cape York Peninsula. Historically, YBM people lived between Annan River and Archer Point and moved throughout this area with the seasons to hunt and gather foods. After many decades of neglect and land speculation, Yuku-Baja-Muliku have land returned to our people. We believe that it is our responsibility to ensure sustainable and comprehensive management of this significant region, while also allowing our people the opportunity to strive towards economic independence.
To meet these responsibilities, YBM have developed several plans and initiatives over the past 14 years, including an Indigenous Land & Sea Ranger Program, TUMRA, and a Land and Sea Country Strategic Plan. Building on this work, YBM developed this project, Understanding the impacts of erosion control and fire management on water quality in Yuku-Baja-Muliku Country, to address the features that we see as foundational to management of our country: Erosion Control, fire management and water quality management.
