Yorta Yorta Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC) was formed in 1998 to represent the rights and interests of the Yorta Yorta Nation and its members.  Our organisation is aiming to continue our connection to Yorta Yorta Country and to progress our rights and interests in our cultural identity, social justice, land justice and economic development.

The Cultural Heritage Manager will lead and manage the Cultural Heritage Unit, The primary objective of the role is to empower the YYNAC people as protectors of our cultural heritage and to promote respect in the broader community for Yorta Yorta cultural values.

The position is responsible for ensuring that all Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) responsibilities are met in accordance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 provisions, and for representing Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC) to build awareness of cultural heritage within Yorta Yorta Country.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the YYNAC Cultural Heritage Unit in fulfilling our statutory responsibilities under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, in line with best practice, 
  • Develop a comprehensive plan for YYNAC Cultural Heritage both Tangible and Intangible in achieving the aims of the Yorta Yorta People as detailed in the YYNAC Whole of Country Plan and advised through the YYNAC Council of Elders.
  • Provide expert advice to Yorta Yorta Council of Elders as to the functions of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2018.
  • Undertake meetings, respond to enquiries, and complete evaluations for major projects being undertaken on Yorta Yorta country.
  • Facilitate heritage assessments, including research partnerships, to ensure they are being undertaken in a collaborative and co-ordinated manner, and in line with the outcomes requested by the Yorta Yorta Council of Elders.
  • Lead the development of any ACHLMAs being established between YYNAC and Public Land Managers.
  • In consultation with the YYNAC CFO and HR, develop policies and processes that support the efficient management of the Heritage Unit and aid in creating a supportive working environment.
  • Lead and assist with meetings relevant to Cultural Heritage Projects with relevant stakeholders, such as community groups, members of the public, government and YYNAC members.
  • Oversee coordination, documentation and reporting on field work involving heritage protection.
  • Develop strategies and initiatives to assist Yort Yorta Elders and Community to identify and protect areas of cultural significance.
  • Build collaborative links with other organisation.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • University qualifications in Archaeology, Anthropology or equivalent qualification.
  • At least 5 years' experience in Cultural Heritage Management.
  • At least 5 years' experience in leading a team.
  • Ability to draft reports and documents for Heritage Assessments, reporting to the CEO and to AV/VAHC etc as required.
  • Excellent customer relations and communication skills and an ability to connect with external stakeholders on a business and cultural level.
  • Ability to support the implementation of systems and processes, and to comply with all safety regulations and YYNAC policy and procedures.
  • Ability to support and mentor people.
  • Experience in use of computer software such as Microsoft Office, GIS Software, internet and email, publisher and project management databases.
  • Driver's license (manual).
