As a peak body, the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia (ZAA) represents the collective voice of the zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries and wildlife parks across Australasia that operate to the highest standards.

ZAA and its members lead over 100 breeding programs in support of conservation and community education. Additionally, we actively contribute to threatened species recovery around the world.

We have a progressive, science-based approach to animal welfare. Using the Five Domains Animal Welfare Assessment Model, this approach champions welfare from the animal’s perspective and it underpins all that we do.

As an association, ZAA brings its members together, facilitating shared knowledge and continuous improvement in conservation, welfare, biosecurity, science, research, social and community programs.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Full-time, permanent role reporting to the ZAA Executive Director. Based at the ZAA Office on Cammeraigal Country at Taronga Zoo Sydney with an exclusive view of the squirrel monkeys. Hybrid options are available with the opportunity to work from home up to 2 days per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The ZAA Communications Manager will be responsible for managing internal and external communications to support execution of the ZAA Strategy across three pillars: (1) connected communities, (2) resilient organisations and (3) progressive practices.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Management of brand strategy & equity across all ZAA brands:
    • Zoo & Aquarium Association (ZAA)
    • Wildlife Conservation Fund (WCF)
    • Centre for Species Survival (CSS)
  • Collaboratively develop public positions and messaging on behalf of ZAA and its membership.
  • Proactive media relations to raise profile of ZAA brands, regional conservation impact and ZAA Accreditation.
  • Manage risks through media relations, stakeholder engagement and member support.
  • Lead communications team with a focus on supportive management and professional development.
  • Manage ZAA member engagement via agile communications and leadership to deliver member value and achieve outcomes for key ZAA initiatives.
  • Deliver value for members and ZAA initiatives via professional and engaging event management of the ZAA Annual Conference
  • Project management of fundraising and grant opportunities for the CSS
  • Development of business strategies to secure long term funding for the CSS
  • Administrative support for the Conservation Engagement Committee (CEC), Engagement Special Advisory Group (E-SAG) and the Communications Special Advisory Group (Comms-SAG).
  • Oversee ZAA collaborative engagement campaigns, including the regional Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife program.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Marketing / Communications or similar degree or qualification.
  • 4-5 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing stakeholders in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic planning.
  • Awareness of the media landscape and public relations experience.
  • Strong organisation skills and management of competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated capability to take initiative and innovate.
  • Capable of achieving targets with limited resources in a small, high-performance team.
  • Experience in managing team performance and demonstrating leadership.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite including excel and power point.
  • Experience with creative content software packages.
  • Demonstrated experience in event management.
