The Role

The Indigenous Skills and Employment Program (ISEP) “Mob BOOST” Employment Specialist, will report to the Mob BOOST Team Leader and provide targeted training, mentoring and wrap-around support, using a flexible, outreach and place-based approach.

This role focuses on supporting volunteering, work experience, employment and or training opportunities for Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander youth, adults and seniors. The Employment Specialist is responsible for developing meaningful employment opportunities and career pathways that are underpinned by culturally safe workplace principles and practices. The program also supports participants to facilitate and access community services to help address their non-vocational barriers.

Mob BOOST will work with local employed and industry, specifically Health and Aged Care, Community and Social Services, Retain, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Renewable Energy, Childcare, Warehousing, and Construction, to close the employment gab by supported pathways to employment, identifying and leveraging growth opportunities, building local capability, and creating exclusive local employment opportunities. Mob BOOST will also promote positive and sustainable impacts on the local employment landscape.

The Employment Specialist will support the effective delivery of programs and services, that may include accessing traineeships, developing literacy, numeracy and digital literacy capabilities. Additionally, they will foster a collaborative work environment and support strategies to enhance the employment and career prospects of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander individuals across three age groups and as per the contracted scope and purpose of the role, including:

  • Youth (aged 15-25 years) to develop pathways to employment through education and training, including traineeships and apprenticeships.
  • Adults (26-49 years) to develop pathways to employment through leveraging and enhancing their employment history, skills, and experience.
  • Seniors (50-64 years) to develop pathways to employment through leveraging their employment history, skills, and experience, with an emphasis on part-time roles with minimal physical demands where appropriate.

About the person

We are looking for a person with passion and commitment for supporting Aboriginal and or Torres Strait people in obtaining employment that is meaningful to them. You will support participants overcome any barriers to employment, find the right job, and then support them into employment, training and or vocational opportunities.

You will have strong, demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander people, organisations, and communities as well as well-developed communication skills, empathy, and cultural competence. You will directly help participants develop the skills to become meaningfully employed in a suitable work environment.

You will work collaboratively with the Team Leader, Centre Manager, Community & Employer Relationship Coordinator and the Inala Elders to ensure the service delivers tailored recommendations, brings innovative ideas and effective strategies to:

  • support real opportunities and job growth prospects for the participants.
  • to attain improved work readiness, foundational skills, and job-specific skills.
  • to achieve job outcomes as local barriers to employment are addressed.
  • to sustain long-term, meaningful employment in a culturally safe workplace

Selection Criteria

  • Holds a minimum Diploma in Community Services, Counselling, Career Counselling, Community Services, Career Development, Business Administration, or, related field.
  • Has one year minimum experience in either vocational training or vocational rehabilitation, disability employment services or as a career practitioner.
  • Has a minimum of one year experience working in direct practice (face to face) with participants.
  • Demonstrated experience providing one-on-one support including career guidance, skill development and or job or volunteer placements.
  • Strong understanding of the cultural, social, and economic issues facing Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Experience in developing and facilitating tailored programs and support services for diverse participants, including youth, adults, and seniors.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders, including employers, community organisations, and government agencies.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with local employers to create employment opportunities.
  • Experience in maintaining accurate records and documentation, including compliance with relevant policies and legal requirements.
  • Familiarity with data management systems, such as DEX, for reporting and tracking participant progress is desirable.
  • Strong commitment to supporting self-determination and providing participant-centred services that address individual needs and aspirations.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, database applications, and other social media/web apps.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks and deliver to agreed deadlines.
  • Ability to work autonomously, coordinate multiple activities simultaneously and prioritise competing demands.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a productive team member.
  • High levels of professionalism, confidentiality and discretion and the ability relate to and work effectively with young people.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to changing work environments and requirements.
