We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Media & Communications Lead to join our small but dedicated team in Sydney. This role offers a unique opportunity to amplify the impact of ground-breaking legal work in international justice and human rights.
Reporting to the Executive Director/Principal Lawyer, you will lead ACIJ's communications strategy across all program areas, working to increase public understanding of international justice issues and build support for accountability mechanisms in Australia.
You will generate meaningful earned media outcomes – securing editorial coverage and interviews that effectively communicate the impact of international crimes and the importance of accountability. You will build and maintain relationships with media outlets to ensure our cases, legal developments, and advocacy work receive the attention they deserve.
You will be ensuring ACIJ maintains a clear, confident, and consistent voice across all communication channels. This includes managing our social media presence and working with partner organisations to maximise the reach and impact of communications around international justice initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of ACIJ's communications strategy, ensuring alignment with our mission, vision and strategic objectives
- Design and execute media campaigns that effectively communicate complex legal concepts and human rights issues to diverse audiences
- Build and maintain relationships with key journalists and media outlets to generate meaningful coverage of international justice issues
- Produce high-quality content including media releases, opinion pieces, reports, briefings and presentations
- Manage ACIJ's digital presence across website and social media platforms
- Support the Executive Director and staff, in public engagement, advocacy and stakeholder relationships
- Coordinate communications around legal cases, policy submissions and advocacy initiatives
- Contribute to policy development and law reform work
- Assist with events, publications and donor communications
- Support fundraising efforts through effective communication of ACIJ's impact
Selection Criteria
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in communications, media, journalism or related field
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in strategic communications roles
- Exceptional writing and editing skills with ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly
- Demonstrated experience building successful media campaigns and relationships
- Strong digital communications skills including website and social media management
- Excellent project management and organisational abilities
- Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively in a small team
- Knowledge of MailChimp and Wordpress platforms
- Graphic design skills
Desirable
- Experience in human rights, international justice or related fields
- Understanding of international criminal law and universal jurisdiction
- Knowledge of trauma-informed communication practices
- Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders

Employment Details
- Location: Sydney
- Hours: 23 hours to 30 hours per week (0.6 – 0.8 FTE) To be discussed.
- Contract: 12 months fixed term with possibility of extension
- Salary Range: $58,938 to $76,876 + 11.5% superannuation
