Primary Purpose of the role

Deliver the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) WHS management system by working collaboratively across the organisation, coaching, and influencing to integrate safety and wellbeing into core business operations.

Born out of a protest movement over 50 years ago, the ALS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation delivering high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in NSW and the ACT. About the role

The Work, Health and Safety Manager is part of the Shared Services Team reporting to the Head of Human Resources.

The Work, Health and Safety Manager will be responsible for, but are not limited to:

Work Health & Safety Management

  • Lead the development, implementation, and compliance of the WHS management system (WHSMS) and framework.
  • Receive and report on hazards, incidents, WHS targets, and initiatives to the Executive leadership team regularly.
  • Investigate incidents, report notifiable incidents to the WHS regulator.
  • Ensure inspections, audits, risk register maintenance, and action item completion are documented and reported.
  • Coach responsible persons on aspects of the WHSMS and assist in WHS documentation development and review.

Facilities and Fleet

  • Assist in the management of contractor safety include any new contractors in regular reporting.
  • Assist in delivery of a schedule of planned emergency evacuations and warden training.

Emergency Management

  • Ensure Fire Wardens, First Aid Officers, emergency evacuation diagrams, and First Aid kits are in place and regularly audited.
  • Promote safe and healthy work practices in accordance with legislation and policies.

Compliance Training

  • Develop and rollout training and wellbeing initiatives to operationalise the WHSMS.

WHS Committee

  • Oversee, attend and facilitate ALS WHS Committee meetings, tasks, and actions in accordance with legislation.

Reporting

  • Provide high-quality data-driven reporting for the Executive team and ALS Board.
  • Develop and monitor WHS and wellbeing annual programs to improve WHSMS effectiveness and achieve performance objectives.

About you

We’re looking for someone who brings:

Essential

  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar WHS role
  • WHS qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience leading and implementing WHS plans, policies and procedures
  • Up-to-date knowledge of, and proven ability to interpret and apply, WHS legislation and providing advice to managers and staff
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment
  • Proactive examples of leading and contributing to an organisational culture that supports an effective safety and wellbeing environment through systems, processes and personal behaviours
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal people combined with continuing respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices when considering service delivery and other support for clients, their families, communities and employees

Desirable

  • Identifies as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
