Community Network Lead - Flexible Location

Australia Palestine Advocacy Network

The current genocide taking place in Gaza is bringing unfathomable loss of life, pain and suffering to Palestinians who live in the Gaza strip. There is extreme urgency in bringing about a permanent ceasefire and to get urgently needed humanitarian aid into Gaza in quantities large enough to tackle the immediate need and the need that will persist as Gaza’s homes, neighbourhood and infrastructure is rebuilt.

This role will work specifically to foster advocacy to ensure that the Australian government plays its role in ensuring that there is a permanent ceasefire and unfettered access for aid and reconstruction to Gaza. It will do this by building a community activist network that will engage, educate, activate and lobby in their local community.

Key responsibilities

Build a community-based network of supporters who engage in their local community and with their local, state and national political leader about the need for a permanent ceasefire, unfettered access for humanitarian aid and reconstruction for Gaza, an end to attacks on all Palestinians and Palestinian self-determination.

Community Advocacy

  • Work with General Manager on broader movement building strategy
  • Develop and distribute resources to members of the network to enable them to hold community events, kitchen table discussions, talks, film screenings, street stalls and other events/activities to engage and activate their local communities.
  • Develop and distribute educational resources about the situation in Gaza, the humanitarian assistance needed by Gazans and how the community can assist in this process.
  • Respond to requests from the public/communities for resources and assistance in advocacy for a ceasefire, unfettered aid access in Gaza, an end to attacks on all Palestinians and Palestinian self determination.

Constituent lobbying

  • Work with the Political Engagement Lead to develop a strategy for communities engagement with their local MPs and local government.
  • Resource and train supporters to be able to effectively engage with MPs including navigating the process, messaging, follow up and building an on-going relationship.
  • Provide advice and support to supporters in their lobbying efforts.
  • Develop ‘leave behind’ resources for MPs to better understand the issues around Palestine.

Infrastructure, monitoring, evaluation

  • Establish a sustainable community activist network that has an effective and easy to use communication infrastructure and that documents all local actions including meetings with MPs.
  • Document the training, advice and resources used to develop supporters’ skills and for them to be advocates so this work can be easily rolled out in the future.
  • Develop an evaluation framework that will allow APAN to see the level and forms of activation that have been achieved at a local level.

People of Palestinian background are strongly encouraged to apply. We do not discriminate on the basis of sex, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability. We welcome people from all backgrounds, particularly those who are often marginalised, to apply for all our roles.
