Located on Gadigal and Bidjigal land (Randwick NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. The Role

The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Specialist will be responsible for driving and embedding a culture of safety throughout The Black Dog Institute, whilst ensuring all facets of safety are met to the highest operational and legislative standards. In addition, the WHS Specialist will provide support and participate in the development in the strategies that foster a safe and healthy workplace. This role will work closely with the wider People and Culture team and in conjunction with the WHS Committee to design, implement and model improved safety standards across the Institute.

Duties & Responsibilities

Safety Culture:

  • Provide people leaders and employees with information and guidance on WHS practice, policy and procedure, empowering them to proactively manage and reduce risk.
  • Coordinate and implement WHS uplift project across the organisation.
  • Enhancing safety capability and accountability across the organisation whilst assisting in the ongoing learning around safety.
  • Assist in the implementation and education of the Work Health and Safety policy, and organisation safety statement that outlined clear responsibilities of employees across the organisation.

Operational Compliance:

  • Implement and embed WHS reporting framework and system that incorporates Incident, Hazard and Risk reporting.
  • Support the effective implementation of the WHS management system and driving a high safety culture.
  • Undertake WHS audits and incident investigations, coordinating appropriate corrective actions and reporting on trends.
  • Provide WHS advice and support to the Institute to ensure compliance inline with legislation and best practice principles.
  • Standardise document control monitoring, polices, procedures, SOPs and ensuring information is easily accessible for employees.
  • Ensure Risk Assessments (RAs) are completed for identified risks, psychosocial etc across the organisation in conjunction with subject matter experts.
  • Work closely with Learning and Development to identify gaps in safety learning that cover the entire employee lifecycle and provide advice and guidance on how this can be improved.
  • Enhance and refine Emergency Management Procedures that monitor, measures and evaluates health and safety performance across the organisation.
  • Ensure WHS function and practices compliance with relevant federal, state, local and statutory regulations

Stakeholder Management:

  • Consulting with the WHS committee, Executive Leadership Team and various stakeholders across the organisation on safety concerns and identifying opportunities for WHS improvements.
  • Work in partnership with external consultants to deliver on process improvement initiatives and safety uplift.

Work, Health and Safety (WHS):

  • Ensure self-compliance with all WHS legislation and BDI WHS Policy and Procedures.
  • Report any WHS hazards and significant issues to Director, People & Culture, or delegate.
  • Work In a safe manner, applying duty of care.

Skills & Experience Required

  • Relevant experience in Work Health and Safety and/or a Diploma level WHS qualification.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering safety leadership advice and support to resolve problems where a number of complex topics need to be addressed.
  • High level knowledge of relevant WHS legislation with the ability to interoperate and implement in a practical setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in implementing WHS management systems, end to end incident and hazard investigations, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build and maintain working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate, influence and gain collaboration of internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to contribute to a safety focused organisational culture, through Work Health & Safety systems, initiatives, projects, and strategies.
  • Sound written and presentation skills with ability to prepare written reports, submissions, applications, presentations and correspondence to a high standard.
  • Proven ability and experience in contributing to a positive safety culture
  • Demonstrated project management skills to ensure initiatives are on track.
