The Community Bike Hub facilitator position is a dynamic role allowing you to share your love of bikes and education with middle years students whilst making a positive impact in our local community.

Nestled in the cultural heart of the western suburbs, our unique ‘hands on’ learning program provides year 9 Footscray High School students with a unique opportunity to learn practical skills and build personal capabilities whilst positively contributing to a functioning social enterprise. Groups of approximately 15 students participate in the 4 day program every week. Students get stuck into everything from bicycle recycling, refurbishment, repair and workshop management. The goal for students is to build the confidence and skills necessary to ‘build’ a bike fit for handing out to refugees and people in need. The role is a partnership between Footscray High School and the Community Bike Hub.

About the role

2 Days per week 8am-4pm

The Facilitator will independently lead groups of students through the program 2 days per week. You will need to create a positive environment and ensure the safety of all students at all times. Learning materials and training will be provided to ensure the learning content is delivered in a manner that is engaging and outcome driven.

As the classroom facilitator, you will be responsible for the management of students and delivering the content to maximise learning, personal development and overall experience. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Teaching and facilitating the bicycle program with clarity, patience and a high level of engagement
  • Exercise a high level of Duty of Care, upholding the health and safety of all participants and responding to risks with a high degree of competence
  • Providing support and active guidance to help students achieve their goals and build their self-confidence
  • Practising positive role modelling and instilling respectful relationships
  • Managing a variety of program needs by maintaining excellent communication with all team members and students
  • Demonstrating best practices of workshop duties, including the execution of mechanical skills and positive behaviours

Skill and Experience

A community minded spirit that values education and understanding youth is a must for this role!

You will need to be a mature leader who has foresight and is organised, motivated, reliable with an exceptional level of patience. Using your knowledge and experience, you will teach your students how to use tools, assess bikes and components for function and problem solve every step of the way. You will need an ability to connect with a diverse range of youth to support them in their journey at the Hub. You are a confident leader, with great communication skills and experience in teaching and mentoring youth.

Additionally, you will have:

  • Experience in teaching effectually to a group of 10 or more students
  • Conflict resolution and behaviour management strategies
  • Experience in engaging with a diverse range of middle years students
  • An ability to develop positive and respectful relationships with students
  • High level verbal and presentation skills
  • Creativity to modify lessons as required
  • Deep practical knowledge working on a wide variety of bikes
  • Excellent strategic and problem-solving skills
  • Sound computer proficiency
  • Working with middle years youth is strongly preferred

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ Year’s experience working as a teacher, youth worker or similar
  • Repairing bikes to a high level and safety standards
  • Level 2 first aid
  • Working with children's check
  • Police Check
