ABOUT BOOMERANG ALLIANCE

The Boomerang Alliance was formed in 2003 with the aim of a zero-waste society. We are a national community-based organisation advocating for waste reduction and resource recovery. Our campaign work has covered issues such as beverage and plastic bag litter, toxic tyres, electronic waste, plastic packaging, and circular economics. Our network includes 55 national and state environment groups and many community organisations.

A key current focus is on plastic pollution. Previously our aim has been the introduction of container deposit schemes for beverage containers in each state, and the phase-out of single-use plastic bags. With the implementation of these now in most Australian states and territories, Boomerang Alliance has been addressing other single-use, fossil-fuel based plastics commonly found in the waste and litter stream, including being actively involved in single-use plastic bans in several states.

PLASTIC FREE PLACES

Boomerang Alliance’s Plastic Free Places (PFP) program was established in 2018 as a community-focused program to promote the switch from single-use, disposable plastic takeaway products to better practices and alternatives.

Utilising extensive experience gained through over 20 PFP projects across seven states & territories, the program directly engages with food retailers and other identified sectors to facilitate the transition away from key single-use plastic food service items. The combined impact across all our programs is over 30 million pieces of single-use plastic eliminated.

CHOOSE TO REUSE PORT DOUGLAS & PLASTIC FREE FNQ

In an Australian first pilot, we're bringing together the tourism and hospitality sectors in Port Douglas to increase the use of reusable cups, bags and water bottles by both tourists and locals.

The coordinator will assist the implementation of the project within a framework already developed by our experienced team.

The chosen coordinator will be at the forefront of the reusables movement, helping to implement a program which serve as a template for other communities across Australia.

Additionally, the coordinator will help to maintain our base program (Plastic Free FNQ) in Cairns, in operation since 2020, working with select businesses and events to assist their transition away from single-use plastic.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Coordinator will be employed for 20 hours per week on an 18-month contract to deliver on the goals of the program, with the possibility contract extension. The position is home-based and flexible with days and hours, but does require on-ground engagement with identified sectors, so the majority should be conducted Mon-Fri to fit in with suitable hours for business engagement. Weekend work is not required. You will be able to set your own schedule, and work this position around other commitments.

The role will be centred in and around Port Douglas, with some work in Cairns, so the coordinator will need to live within reasonable driving distance of both Port Douglas and Cairns (closer to Port Douglas preferred).

The applicant will need a vehicle, computer and phone to perform the requirements of the role (allowances for phone + fuel are provided).

The base rate is $40.05 an hour + 11.5% SGC superannuation, personal/carers leave entitlements, annual leave & loading, paid fortnightly.

The position will commence in Late August / early September 2024 (with some flexibility with starting date). All training and on-going support will be provided.

With support from our experienced local and national team, the Coordinator will focus on the implementation of the project, with specific tasks including:

• On-ground engagement with hospitality, hotel and tourism providers, plus select events.
• Filming of video content (all equipment and training provided).
• Media and public spokesperson of the project where required.
• Production of social media content.
• Liaison with stakeholders to ensure project objectives are being met.
• Content management of member database.
• Data collection and reporting

The coordinator will report to the PFP Program Manager, who will be responsible for overseeing the program.

This role requires someone comfortable with a flexible working environment. We have a very experienced (and fun) national team with peers all over the country. You will be very well supported, but expected to work mostly autonomously and set your own schedule.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Confidence working with a range of business stakeholders.
• An interest in waste and plastic pollution issues.
• Familiarity with the local area and culture.

Desirable:

• A bachelor’s degree qualification, preferably related to an environment or communications field.
• Experience within the hospitality/tourism/hotel sector would be well regarded.
• Photography or videography skills will be well regarded.
• Proficiency with social media.
