We are looking for someone with an eye for strategy, who believes in the power of collaboration and collective action. The right candidate will join a team of accomplished campaigners and get the opportunity to drive powerful change in Australia’s response to climate change.
Climate Action Network Australia (CANA) is a network of organisations working together to protect people from climate change and its impacts, to safeguard our natural environment, and to build a fairer and healthier Australia for everyone. Our vision is a fair and sustainable Australia free of climate pollution, where people and nature are protected from dangerous climate change. We foster strategic thinking and campaign collaboration between our members.
Solutions for Climate Australia is a program of CANA that focuses on strategies to influence all sides of federal politics to develop stronger policies on climate. Our team includes some of the best campaigners in the country - we think big and we deliver big outcomes for the climate. The project advocates for durable, decisive solutions which address the economic, environmental, security and social impacts of climate change in Australia and our region.
Solutions for Climate is very focused on showing all sides of politics that climate is a key issue influencing their constituents. This new role is your chance to be part of a dynamic campaign that focuses on amplifying community action and sentiment.
The position will create, support and drive deep community support for action on climate. The Climate Campaigner will plan and drive campaign strategies associated with mobilising, organising, and supporting local and constituency-based community groups around the country to make themselves heard. It will require travel and a lot of tactical advice and support, which means spending time undertaking and supporting tactics like local events and doorknocking.
The position will work closely with the Solutions for Climate Australia team, other CANA staff, and with leaders from CANA member organisations. This role will report to the Senior Campaign Manager.
Climate Action Network Australia is a flexible workplace with work-from-home and office options and flexible working hours. We would particularly encourage applicants based in Sydney or Melbourne, where you can share a physical space with project team members.
Strengthen and increase influence on federal political parties and independents, especially by building and supporting on-ground community organisations with tactics deployment like helping to organise events or write communications materials.
Manage contracts with partner organisations to ensure successful delivery of campaign tactics.
Identify campaign opportunities. Devise and implement tactics to influence parties and parliamentarians based on the Solutions for Climate Australia strategy.
Work closely with other staff and allies to leverage relationships and implement tactics to influence parliament, parties and individual MPs.
Remuneration: $80,000 - $100,000 per annum plus superannuation - full time (1.0 FTE).
Contract to 30 June 2025
We are open to candidates with more or less experience, with pay matched accordingly.
Essential:
At least three years campaigning/mobilising/organising experience or similar.
Demonstrated ability to mobilise community members and assist them in exerting their influence on decision makers.
Excellent time management, professional initiative, prioritisation, and networking skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at once in a self-directed manner.
A good understanding of the Australian political landscape.
Sound judgement and excellent strategic and tactical skills.
Eagerness to undertake relatively frequent travel within Australia.
A belief in the power and necessity of building community support for positive change.
Ability to work with Australians from a wide range of age, class and ethnic backgrounds.
Desirable:
Experience in developing campaign strategies and tactics to win significant outcomes.
An understanding of climate science and the economic, social and environmental impacts of human-induced climate change
An understanding and previous experience with or within NGOs working on climate change
Existing contacts with federal MPs and advisers
Previous experience organising diverse community organisations for advocacy at a state or national scale.
