Solutions for Climate Australia (Solutions) is the federal political advocacy project of Climate Action Network Australia (CANA). Solutions aims to bring about federal bipartisanship on higher climate ambition this decade, seeks to better coordinate the climate movement and fill the gaps on climate advocacy in Australia to that end. Since commencing in 2021 Solutions has achieved major outcomes in its work.

Climate Action Network Australia (CANA) supports the Australian climate movement to achieve real action to protect people at home and abroad from climate change, to safeguard our natural environment, and to build a fair, clean, healthy Australia for everyone. We support and help drive strategic thinking and campaign collaboration between members and allies nationally and internationally.

THE Role

The WA Senior Climate Campaigner will plan, co-lead and drive formal and informal alliances with business, civil society and local community organisations to advocate powerfully for greater climate ambition in Western Australia, engaging with political parties of all persuasions. This position will work closely with the Solutions for Climate Australia team, other CANA staff, and leaders from CANA member organisations and allies in Western Australia.

POSITION DETAILS

Remuneration: $110K+ per annum plus superannuation, dependent on experience - full time (1.0 FTE). 

Reports to: the Solutions for Climate Director, Barry Traill in the short term. A WA Director will be appointed later in the year and will take over management of the position.

LOCATION:

Western Australia, with a strong preference that the successful candidate live in Perth.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and implement advocacy strategies and tactics that create greatly improved climate policies and delivery in Western Australia.
  2. Strengthen and increase community power, including building and supporting on-ground community organisations in the overall Western Australian political space. This includes working with the Solutions Operations Manager to set up and deliver contracts with local groups to target ongoing power building amongst communities.
  3. Identify and create campaign opportunities. Devise and implement tactics to influence parties and parliamentarians based on sector and community connections and the overall Western Australian strategy.
  4. Work closely with other staff and allies to leverage relationships and implement tactics to influence the WA Parliament, parties and individual MPs.
  5. Working with others in the Solutions for Climate team, and other allies, track and advise as needed on federal and global politics that influence WA climate politics.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Essential:

  • Experience in developing campaign strategies and tactics to win significant outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including private, government and civil society representatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to mobilise community members and assist them in exerting their influence on decision makers.
  • Excellent time management, professional initiative, prioritisation, and networking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at once in a self-directed manner.
  • An understanding of the Western Australian political landscape.
  • Sound judgement and excellent strategic and tactical skills.
  • Experience with government, including the ability to engage and influence MPs, political advisers, government departments and agencies effectively and strategically.

DESIRABLE:

  • An understanding of climate science and the economic, social and environmental impacts and policy opportunities to tackle human-induced climate change.
  • An understanding and previous experience with or within NGOs working on climate change in WA and nationally.
  • Existing contacts with Western Australian MPs and advisers.
  • An understanding of the WA gas industry.
  • Previous successful experience organising and uniting diverse community organisations for advocacy at a state or national scale.
  • Previous experience working in a diverse NGO movement where outcomes and alliances are often obtained using personal or informal power.
  • Media experience, including both setting up coverage and doing interviews.
