An exciting new opportunity exists within the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service to join our legal team and develop the Criminal law practice.

CAWLS is seeking a self-motivated candidate with high-order advocacy and written communication and problem-solving skills, demonstrated legal practice experience and a strong work ethic. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about improving access to justice for women in Central Australia and the Barkly.

CAWLS is a busy community legal practice with a vibrant and dedicated team committed to providing representation and excellent outcomes for our clients through law reform, legal advice and representation, community legal education and outreach. Many of our clients are women who have experienced or are experiencing Domestic and Family violence.

Reporting to the Senior Management team, the Senior Criminal Lawyer will play a crucial role in providing high-quality criminal legal advice and representation within the organisation's areas of practice and guidelines. You will also demonstrate leadership in gender-responsive and feminist lawyering by providing CPD to other CAWLS lawyers and ensuring legal services align with the Centre's practice modes, organisational priorities, professional responsibilities, and funding obligations.

Crucial in your success in this role is your high level interpersonal and communication and negotiation skills and demonstrated ability to liaise and communicate effectively with staff, external stakeholders and clients with complex needs and from diverse backgrounds.

Total effective package includes: base salary, superannuation, leave loading, relocation assistance and salary packaging options.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Senior Solicitor with the Central Australian Women’s Legal Service, you will be working in a small but busy and tight knit team. You will assist other solicitors and have carriage of a number of your own matters.

RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the law practice and its systems
  • Representing clients in court and providing duty lawyer services
  • Supervision and mentoring junior staff
  • Contributing to community legal education resources and presentations
  • Developing networks with relevant community-based organisations
  • Participating in policy and law reform activities
  • Other duties as delegated by the Senior Management team

ABOUT YOU

To qualify, you will have completed a Bachelor of Law degree and be eligible for a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory. In addition, you will have a minimum of 4 years experience in Criminal Law along with demonstrated managerial experience. A background in women's legal services, with experience in domestic and family violence, is preferred.

You will be comfortable working collaboratively with professionals across different disciplines both internally and externally to provide a holistic, trauma-informed, and wrap-around service to clients.
