The FBEU represents more than 6,500 professional firefighters in NSW. We are a union with a proud, militant history and culture. FBEU Members work in diverse jobs and face a variety of industrial challenges.The primary focus of this role will be to provide day to day management, supervision, mentoring and training to our team of industrial officers along with industrial support, advice and representation to members. This may also involve legal/industrial representation and therefore a Law Degree is highly desirable for this role.

A commitment to trade union values is essential and experience of working with unions in a similar role previously is desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Day to day management of the FBEU Industrial Team including supervision, training, mentoring.
  • Development and maintenance of work flow and work management systems to support the Industrial Team in their work.
  • Assisting with the resolution of member issues both individual and collective, including representation in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission for dispute resolution from conciliation through to arbitration and where necessary other litigation.
  • Represent the FBEU in a variety of forums including on consultative bodies and working parties.
  • Support providing legal and industrial advice to the FBEU leadership on industrial matters.
  • Support with researching, drafting and negotiation of Awards as required.
  • Support with research and drafting of submissions as required.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required.

Selection Criteria:

Essential

  • A commitment to the principles of trade unionism.
  • Previous experience working within a Union environment in a Senior Industrial Officer / Industrial Officer role.
  • Previous experience managing, supervising and mentoring a team.
  • Experience interpreting and applying Awards, other industrial instruments and legislation.
  • Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and proficiency using computers.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in law or a related field.
  • Understanding and experience of the NSW Industrial Relations System.
