Kara Family Violence Service is a specialist family violence service that provides crisis accommodation, transitional housing and outreach support to women and children experiencing family violence.

Kara Family Violence Service is currently seeking a support worker for our 24-hour, high security refuge. The successful applicant will be able to work alone, be mature, calm and proactive with a high awareness of risk management.

This position will suit a new graduate aiming to gain experience, a student undertaking further studies or a person re-entering the workforce. The support worker will be provided backup at all times.

Ideally the applicant will have some family violence experience, although training will be provided.

This is not a case management position and family violence support will be provided to residents of Kara Family Violence Service by specialist family violence practitioners.

The position is permanent part time and requires sleepover, and weekend work as well as public holidays depending on the roster.

The roster has set shifts rotating every 3 weeks and will include a minimum of 3-4 nights per weeknight commencing at 4.30pm until 11.00pm followed by a sleepover between 11.00pm and 7.00am and a morning shift from 7.00am to 8.30am. Day shifts on Saturday, Sunday and public Holidays (if required) commence at 8.30 am and conclude at 4.30pm.

Duties include the monitoring of risk on site as well as responding to client calls, preparing client activities, setting up rooms, packing client requirements, light cleaning, sorting and packing donations and other portfolio related activities to be achieved in the hours before and after the official sleepover and during weekend day shifts.

A handover will be provided to the Support Worker at the commencement of a shift and a corresponding handover will be provided by the Support worker to a Kara Family Violence Service specialist family violence practitioner at the conclusion of the shift.

Mandatory requirements:

  • A tertiary qualification in Community Services or related discipline or participation in studies is preferred but not mandatory if there is sufficient experience.
  • Working with Children Check
  • National Police Check (international police check if required)
  • Eligibility to work in Australia
  • Current unrestricted Victorian driver’s license with clean driving record
  • Qualification check (original documents)
  • Pre-employment safety screening including employment history and disclosure of previous or current disciplinary action
  • Referee checks, including most recent supervisor
  • Commitment to Child Safety and adherence to the Kara Family Violence Service Child Safety requirements
  • Ethical behaviour and adherence to the Kara Family Violence Service Code of Conduct

The position is based in the City of Monash.

The successful applicant is required to be available to undertake a two day induction asap with a view to commencing in the role from the first week in January 2025.
