Context

Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH) is a national, community-based organisation which is led by and for women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. We advocate and educate to strengthen the health, safety and leadership of migrant and refugee women and gender diverse people in Australia.

MCWH works together with migrant and refugee women, community organisations, health practitioners, employers, communities, and governments to build and share knowledge, achieve equity and improve health and wellbeing for migrant and refugee women and gender diverse people.

Position Objectives

MCWH’s vision is for migrant and refugee women, gender diverse and non-binary people to be free from all forms of discrimination, to have autonomy over their lives, and experience health equity, well-being and safety in society.

The Communications Officer will contribute to the implementation of MCWH’s communication strategies through digital content development, design, and social media engagement.

Organisational Relationships

Internal

The Communications Officer reports directly to the Strategic Communications Manager and is a member of the Communications department which sits in the Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy Pillar.

The Communications Officer works closely with the Research, Advocacy and Policy department to support the implementation of MCWH’s Communication Strategy as well as the MCWH project and programs team to provide program support.

External

Relevant federal, state and local government departments; funding bodies; national, state and regional research; service delivery and policy bodies; media; external graphic designers and printers; community organisations; training clients; migrant and refugee women and gender diverse people.

Key Responsibilities

Communications Strategy and Planning

  • Provide templates and strategic insight to support MCWH project officers and program staff.
  • Support the implementation of the Communications Strategy

Communications activity

  • Develop content and layout for the following MCWH communications material which includes:
  • MCWH newsletters
  • MCWH social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn)
  • MCWH website
  • MCWH program and event promotion
  • MCWH annual report
  • Develop innovative marketing, communications, media and advocacy collateral for diverse audiences (government, academic, service providers and communities) and channels
  • Develop and support content to support project officers and program teams for use in promotion strategies on the website and on social media channels, including materials translated into languages other than English
  • Prepare articles and images for publication or presentation as required with an understanding of WACG accessibility standards and print quality standards.

Media engagement

  • Contribute to and maintain a media database and records of media coverage and collate analytics and metrics of content for reporting and evaluation purposes.
  • Provide support to the Communications department and Communications Manager as needed which may include interviewing participants to develop stories, drafting media release content, photographing events, and posting content to digital channels.

Business development and funding

  • Provide support for tenders and funding submissions for communications-related programs and projects under the guidance of the Strategic Communications Manager
  • Provide support to the Strategic Communications Manager in planning and preparation for the development of the Business Development Strategy

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to increase MCWH’s communications and advocacy messages and feminist intersectional approach

General Responsibilities

  • Represent MCWH as externally required
  • Prepare work reports as required
  • Participate in planning, development and evaluation of the organisation
  • Develop workplan and participate in regular performance appraisals
  • Support the implementation of organisational activities organised by MCWH working groups, including responding to reasonable requests, training opportunities and surveys organised by MCWH working groups
  • Other duties consistent with the role and as negotiated with the Strategic Communications Manager

Selection Criteria

Essential

Technical Requirements & Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in communications or a related field
  • Excellent written English skills and attention to detail
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a communications role
  • Strong creative and publication skills, including using formatting and design in software such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
  • Fluency with a range of software, online platforms and social media apps (Hootsuite, Microsoft suite, WordPress, MailChimp, Eventbrite/Humanitix
  • Experience creating, graphic designing and moderating content for social media platforms in a business or not-for-profit context
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement with health, feminist or social justice organisations and stakeholders
  • Experience writing for a wide range of audiences including media, policy makers, speakers new to English, and the general public
  • Experience promoting programs and events
  • Commitment to, and understanding of migrant and refugee women’s health and gender equality from a feminist, intersectional perspective

  • Experience or specialism in a creative communications field (for example journalism, podcast creation, website creation, design, photography, in addition to generalist communication skills)
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English

Special Requirements

  • Some evening or weekend work may be required from time to time
  • MCWH operates according to a hybrid home/office working model

Salary & Conditions

  • SCHADS Award Level 6 pay point 1-3 (106k to 111k annual salary)
  • Salary packaging is available, with a benefit of up to $15,900 per annum
  • Additional leave entitlements:
  • 5 weeks annual leave for up to 5 years’ service and 6 weeks thereafter
  • 3 days ex-gratia leave between Christmas and New Years Day
  • Additional personal leave entitlements

Period of Appointment

Options are available for this to be either a full time (38 hours per week) or part time 0.8 FTE (30.4 hours per week) based on what best suits you. This is a temporary 12-month appointment until 30 August 2024.
