Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Council was founded and is still led, governed and directed by women from the NPY region. It was created to give a voice to women across 26 desert communities in the cross-border regions of Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Today, we continue to provide progressive, innovative and evidence-based work in service delivery, advocacy and support.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The Uti Kulintjaku (UK) Project is a series of workshops involving a team of Ngangkari (traditional healers), interpreters and mental health workers, aimed at creating a shared understanding of commonly used mental health terms, words and concepts, healing and recovery. This award-winning program is an innovative response to cultural and language difference and the obstacles these can create between mental health services and those who need help.

This project involves Senior Anangu (Aboriginal people) across the tristate region of WA, NT and SA. It brings together the skills and knowledge of Ngangkari, mental health practitioners, NPY Women’s Council, and senior Anangu women with specific language and literacy skills from local communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a truly unique and interesting position based on NPYWC’s Strengthening Community Capacity and End the Violence Framework that works primarily with Anangu women to increase the capacity of remote communities to respond to mental health problems.

The role organises and facilitates camps and workshops, supports the engagement of communities in campaigns and activities, and performs a broad range of marketing, social media and other administrative activities to support the UK Project.

ABOUT YOU

You will have a relevant tertiary qualification in community development, social work, health, education or another relevant discipline, or extensive work experience in a relevant field. Furthermore, you will have experience developing, implementing and managing projects, strong organisational skills, and well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.

You must be able to work effectively in a cross-cultural and multi-practice environment, be able to work collaboratively with Indigenous people, have a good understanding of the issues that affect Aboriginal people in remote communities, and have a good understanding of trauma informed practice.
