Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Employee Relations/Industrial Relations Specialist to join our team for a 12-month fixed-term contract. This position will play a key role in implementing changes to our employment practices in line with the Fair Work Act and ensuring smooth transitions for our team of union officials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with elected and employed union officials to implement changes required by the Fair Work Act. This includes transitioning from a 3-year electoral cycle to ongoing employment arrangements that will take effect from 31 January 2025. Facilitate discussions to ensure a smooth transition and full compliance with the Fair Work Act.
  • Lead the creation and revision of comprehensive policies and procedures related to hiring, termination, and performance management. Ensure these documents reflect best practices and comply with legal and regulatory standards and Federation’s culture.
  • Oversee the revision of working conditions for 52 elected union officers to align with new Fair Work fixed-term employment regulations. Ensure all policies and procedures meet legal requirements and support fair and equitable employment practices.
  • Develop clear and legally compliant offers of employment and performance management procedures. Ensure all documentation supports organisational objectives and legal requirements.
  • Address and manage a wide range of employment matters for union officers, including resolving disputes, advising on legal obligations, and providing guidance on performance issues.
  • Act as a key liaison between union officials, management, and other stakeholders to address employment-related concerns and foster positive working relationships.
  • Implement and communicate changes in employment practices effectively, ensuring all stakeholders are informed and prepared for new procedures and regulations.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in drafting and updating employment policies and procedures. Ability to create clear, concise, and compliant documentation.
  • Extensive and current understanding of the Fair Work Act and broader employment law. Ability to interpret and apply legal requirements to organisational practices.
  • Significant experience working within the union movement, with a deep understanding of union operations, structures, and employment practices.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess complex employment matters and develop effective solutions. Ability to navigate and resolve conflicts while ensuring compliance with legal and organisational standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage with a range of stakeholders. Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Ability to adapt to changing regulations and organisational needs. Demonstrated flexibility in managing diverse responsibilities and working within a dynamic environment.
