About the organisation

The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation (NATSIEC) is the national peak body representing Indigenous education. NATSIEC members are Indigenous Education Consultative Bodies (IECBs). In 2018, the IECBs raised the importance of establishing a community-controlled national peak body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. In 2023, NATSIEC was established as the peak, independent, community-controlled, national voice on Aboriginal education. NATSIEC is registered with ORIC, a member of the Coalition of Peaks, and sponsored by the Federal Department of Education.

About the role

The Senior Media and Communications Advisor reports directly to the CEO of NATSIEC and will work collaboratively with other NATSIEC staff and board. The position is required to develop strategic media and communication plans while managing NATSIEC’s media space. This includes cross-platform media monitoring, crafting media responses and developing positive relationships with external stakeholders. The position operates with a high degree of autonomy to achieve results in an environment that is frequently changing, complex and presents issues that are often politically sensitive, and which require innovative and sensitive solutions. Additionally, you will be required to provide advice to the CEO and Board of NATSIEC.

About you

You will have experience working in the communications and media space, with a focus on communicating effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, organisations and other stakeholders, alongside a wide range of audiences. You will have skills to support the development of NATSIEC’s corporate branding and image, as well as experience to manage NATSIEC’s presence on relevant social media platforms. You will also have strong written communication skills and the ability to craft media responses to develop positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You will be self-motivated and able to manage your own time to achieve organisational outcomes, while being resilient where you can overcome obstacles and think creatively to solve problems.

Key Requirements

  • A sound knowledge of Aboriginal culture, community and networks and an understanding of the issues that affect Aboriginal people particularly in education and training.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people and with a wide range of audiences including relevant Government staff, peak bodies and service providers.
  • Relevant qualifications would be highly regarded in this role, including but not limited to: Media Management, Journalism or Communications.
  • Demonstrated project management and coordination skills with the ability to deliver impactful messages across various communication channels.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of organisational branding.
  • Exception verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Requirements

  • Responding to Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care course completion (or be prepared to complete this free, online course if you are successful).
  • The successful applicant must be able to pass a National Police Check. Any unrelated offences to working with children will not hinder your application.
  • Driver’s licence
  • A willingness to travel interstate
