The River Nile School is seeking passionate and dedicated individuals to join our Board and Board Committees:

  • A Board Member Representing the Refugee and Asylum Seeker Community
  • Two independent Committee Members, one with finance skills and the other with risk management skills

These voluntary positions offer unique opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction, governance and overall success of a school dedicated to supporting young refugee and asylum seeker women.

Board Member Role Overview

The Board Member representing the refugee and asylum seeker community will:

  • represent the interests and perspectives of the refugee and asylum seeker community on the Board
  • advocate for culturally responsive policies and contribute to the school’s strategic direction
  • collaborate with other Board Members to ensure that the school’s programs are effective and inclusive

The role will require:

  • lived experience as a refugee or asylum seeker, or deep understanding of these communities’ challenges
  • effective communication and advocacy skills
  • commitment to the school’s mission and values

Independent Committee Members Role Overview

The independent Committee Member with finance skills will strengthen the Finance & Audit Committee’s capacity to:

  • provide strategic financial advice to the Board, including budgeting and longer-term financial planning
  • provide operational oversight, including financial reporting and management of external audits
  • support the Board in key financial decision-making processes

The independent Committee Member with risk management skills will assist to:

  • develop the school’s risk management framework
  • provide oversight of the school’s risk management practices
  • assist the school to identify, assess and mitigate risks
  • support the Board in key risk management decision-making processes

Time Commitment

  1. Board Meetings: The Board meets face-to-face in North Melbourne 4-5 times each year
  2. Committee Meetings: Committees meet virtually 4-5 times each year
  3. Additional Engagement: Additional time may be required for preparation, collaboration, and community engagement activities
