Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) is a community controlled Public Benevolent Institution delivering human services and social enterprise activities for the benefit of Aboriginal people from the Alice Springs Town Camps, urban Alice Springs, and Central Australia.

First incorporated in 1979, the organisation was a finalist in the 2016 Reconciliation Australia, Indigenous Governance Awards and is one of the 10 largest Aboriginal Corporations in Australia.

The Opportunity

The Youth and Community Safety Services (YCSS) Division brings together a range of programs that support Aboriginal children, youth and the community to improve safety, education, health and wellbeing outcomes. The Division includes Brown Street youth services, Child and Youth outreach services ,Patrols and Looking After the Kids (LATK).

Brown Street Youth service provide planned and intentional activities and supports for young people, which aim to build their social and emotional skills, support their development, provide a referral to other services and strengthen engagement by young people with education, training and employment.

The Young Women's Mentor is a position created to ensure that the Brown Street Service is an inclusive and safe space for girls and young women. The Young Women's Mentor will work with girls and young women engaged with Tangentyere Youth Services to increase meaningful engagement with the service. The Young Women's Mentor will achieve meaningful engagement by ensuring that the voices of girls and young women are at the centre of planning and development, with a strong focus on consultation and collaboration.

The Young Women's Mentor will develop activities responding to young women's identified needs and interests, aiming to increase wellbeing, self-esteem, and resilience. The program is flexible, as it is guided by consultation with young women. As a result, activities may be recreational, educational, or cultural. They may focus on a range of topics, including women's health and healthy relationships. It is critical for the Young Women's Mentor to ensure that activities are culturally safe and appropriate. As such, the position will rely on the guidance of senior women, families, and communities.

The Young Women's Mentor will directly report to the team leaders and work alongside other Brown Street Staff to ensure that the service is inclusive of girls and young women responding to their specific needs and interests.

As part of your role, you will be working with children, people with a disability and people who are vulnerable. It is your obligation to always ensure their safety and report any concerns in line with our duty of care obligations. We have zero tolerance when it comes to abuse of any kind and will take disciplinary action, including and up to termination of employment, should we determine that abuse has taken place or there has been a failure to report any suspected or alleged abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Engage girls and young women as part of Tangentyere Youth Services to ensure services respond effectively to their voices, needs and aspirations and to ensure their participation and voices in other spaces are legitimised and recognised.
  • Plan and deliver activities and programs for girls and young women to build their social and emotional skills, support their development, and strengthen engagement with training, education and employment.
  • Lead the development of initiatives that celebrate gender inclusion and equality.
  • Develop the "Girls Space" to be a safe and vibrant place for girls and young women to express themselves, connect and learn.
  • Promote and facilitate a leadership group for girls and young women who use Tangentyere Youth Services and provide mentoring to individuals to develop their leadership skills.
  • Act professionally and work as part of a team.
  • Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

  • Qualification in Sport and Recreation, Youth Work, Education or relevant experience is highly preferable.
  • A sound understanding of child and adolescent development.
  • Experience in working with Aboriginal young people and communities.
  • Good communication skills and an ability to develop rapport and support with young people, family members and key stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Current NT Drivers Licence, Ochre Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desirable

  • A current First Aid Certificate, or a willingness to obtain.
  • Knowledge of effective ways to engage young people, the impact of trauma, strengths-based practice, and/or willingness to train in these areas. Transferable life experiences are also valued.
