About the Climate Justice Coalition

The Climate Justice Coalition is a newly-established network of organisations and community groups. Our mission is to weave a national grassroots movement, led by those with most at stake, with the power to transform our politics, shift hearts and minds and win campaigns to end fossil fuels this decade.

Six civil society organisations are founding and coordinating this coalition: 350.org Australia, 350.org Pacific, GetUp, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network, and Tipping Point. The CJC centres First Nations and Pasifika leadership. We are working together ahead of a potential COP31 UN Climate Summit co-hosted in Australia with the Pacific to raise political ambition on phasing out coal and gas, protecting Country, and supporting communities on the frontlines of climate impacts. We aim to foster a loose network model, where people who share and uphold the values are welcome to be a part of the coalition.

About the Role

The Convenor will support our organisations to develop a shared strategy, narrative, organising model and tactics; coordinate activities across the coalition; and lead outreach to grow the coalition beyond the founding organisations.

This role is housed within 350 Australia. 350 Australia is a supportive, small team with benefits including professional development and training, an Employee Assistance Program, the ability to work flexibly and from home, and cultural leave provided to employees.

We are committed to operating in a way that upholds justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Our goal is to become an inclusive organisation for people from diverse backgrounds. We value the lived experience of people on the frontline of climate change and/or extractive fossil fuel industries and can provide support and training opportunities for the right candidate - we encourage applications from those who don’t meet the full criteria below.

Key Responsibilities

  • Driving communication within the coalition, including coordinating logistics and facilitation of meetings among member organisations, and developing processes for decision-making and accountability
  • Project management of public-facing events and communications, such as the launch of an online action hub and in-person town hall events
  • Working with member organisation leaders on strategy development to build the political power of climate-impacted communities and scale the climate justice movement across the continent
  • Conducting outreach and building relationships to identify and support new members of the coalition, particularly First Nations and Pasifika organisations

Key Selection Criteria

  • You are committed to climate justice
  • You have experience working as part of or in solidarity with First Nations communities and communities disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis
  • You have experience in community organising and believe in the power of grassroots movements to drive social change
  • You have strong written communication
  • Strong facilitation skills, including facilitating planning and strategy
  • You have experience working collaboratively on shared projects across organisations and movements
