Board Member - Director (Voluntary)

Tradeswomen Australia Foundation

Since 2013, TWAG has been working hard to increase the representation of women in Australian trade industries. The challenge is considerable. For several decades, Australian trade workforces have been characterized by persistent low levels of female participation, barely moving above 2% of the total workforce in construction jobs alone.

Addressing this is the core business of TWAG and we take a collaborative, strengths-based approach to change this.

TWAG comprises two entities:

  • Tradeswomen Australia (TWA) – organisation that is increasing the representation of women working in skilled trades roles by working with employees and employers across public and private sectors.
  • Tradeswomen Australia Community Foundation (TWACF) – a Foundation with DGR Status that focuses on supporting women and girls from disadvantaged backgrounds that experience multiple forms of intersectional disadvantage to work in trades.

The group builds capacity and capability of the trades industry and employers, the understanding of education and training institutions and the confidence and support to girls and young women to change this statistic. Included in this work we:

  • work with employers to improve the mental wellbeing of employees and workplace culture through diversity and inclusion initiatives. We hope by educating workplace leaders we can help reduce preventable mental injuries.
  • help all employers across the public and private sector become workplace champions to enable gender equal workplaces in the trade sectors
  • help all women secure employment or apprenticeship in fair, safe, and secure workplaces through mentoring, coaching, skills and support
  • working with schools to promote directly to girls and young women the opportunities for work and careers in trades.

The Board

Key to the success of TWAG is the combined Boards of Tradeswomen Australia and the Community Foundation. Right now, TWAG is seeking expressions of interest from experienced and skilled leaders in our community who share our commitment to gender equality in Australian Trades to join our board.

We are keen to hear from interested and capable people who have experience in:

  • A working knowledge of the Australian Construction, Building and Trade sectors
  • A working knowledge of gender equity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Governance and Board Experience
  • Strategic Planning and Risk Management
  • Financial Acumen and Strategic Accounting
  • Law
  • Fundraising
  • Advocacy

We invite expressions of interest from women with experience in male-dominated trades. We strongly encourage you to apply, even if you feel you may not meet all the listed criteria. Your unique perspective and experience are highly valued, and we believe you can make a meaningful contribution to our board.
