The Senior Project Officer, Aged Care & Elders will support the Elders Care workforce employed in Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations across Victoria. In particular, the Senior Project Officer is responsible for supporting training and workforce development activities as part of the Elders Care Support program in Victoria.

This role will liaise with the Aged Care workforce to ensure their training and professional development support adequately enables them to support older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their Communities. Workforce development activities include a ‘train the trainer’ program, delivery of non-accredited training including a particular focus on embedding cultural safety and trauma informed practice, and advocacy to ensure workers and clients participating in the Aged Care services are culturally safe.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertake and complete a non-accredited training program, including a train the trainer program.
  • Ensure that nationally consistent training and onboarding materials are customised for a Victorian context and kept up to date, to meet workforce needs.
  • Deliver a suite of non-accredited training and introduce an onboarding program to support the workforce in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Work collaboratively with ACCOs to deliver non-accredited training and identify and develop other beneficial training resources.
  • Understand workforce needs and provide proactive support to the workforce, and ongoing access to professional development and mentoring as required.
  • Advocacy to ensure workforce needs are being met, and to address any issues with the aged care landscape.
  • Building knowledge of local services and organisations workforce can utilise.
  • Produce and deliver communiques and resources and organise engagement activities including Yarning Circles as required.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience working with older Aboriginal people and Elders.
  • Experience working in a system navigation role, or in client advocacy.
  • Experience in, or in-depth understanding of the Australian Aged Care system and issues affecting access for older Aboriginal people and Elders.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience using Microsoft applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Project Management) combined with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and commitment to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, and health.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the philosophy and practice of Aboriginal Community Control.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal peoples, Communities, and organisations, in a culturally safe, and appropriate, manner.
  • Demonstrated understanding of LGBTQIASB+ issues and experience with LGBTQIASB+ people via professional engagement, employment or lived experience.
