The Victorian Trades Hall Council (VTHC) is looking to employ a worker with OHS experience as an OHS Information and Website Organiser based within the Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Unit.

ABOUT VTHC AND THE OHS TEAM

VTHC is the peak body for unions in Victoria. It provides industrial support for affiliated unions and runs campaigns to promote the interests of Victorian workers.

The OHS Unit’s role is to work with unions and stakeholders across the community to identify workplace safety and rights issues, educate Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and workers generally about their safety and rights and support and organise them in enforcing these when they have been put at risk. It also campaigns on OHS and Workers Compensation issues to improve the lives of all workers, including injured workers.

DUTIES INCLUDE

  • Updating the ohsrep.org.au website to keep abreast of changes in OHS laws and emerging hazards
  • Providing OHS advice and assistance to HSRs, workers and VTHC affiliates and to build capacity to successfully resolve OHS issues onsite
  • Writing and publishing the weekly VTHC OHS newsletter - SafetyNet Journal
  • Representing VTHC at WorkSafe forums and providing oral and written feedback to WorkSafe on new initiatives and proposed workplace guidance materials
  • Representing VTHC at OHS meetings, events and conferences as needed

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent knowledge of the Victorian OHS legislative framework
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to set priorities when faced with competing demands
  • The ability to work with a range of stakeholders, including WorkSafe, educational institutions, unions and regional Trades and Labour Councils
  • Competent skills in IT and social media
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team
  • A thorough understanding of organising frameworks to engage and mobilise community and individuals
  • A commitment to trade union principles and the belief that everyone should come home safe from work

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES

  • Previous organising experience with a trade union or similar organisation
  • Knowledge of the Victorian Workers Compensation systems

MORE INFORMATION

The position is currently being performed at 4 days per week but hours are negotiable for the successful candidate.

VTHC has an attractive collective agreement including a monthly RDO (in recognition of occasional additional hours) plus 12% superannuation. The position will be paid at Level 7 ($103,623 FTE) in our classification structure.

The position will be based out of the VTHC offices in Carlton.
