About us:

Windana is a refuge run by women for women and children. We provide crisis accommodation and support to women and children escaping domestic and family violence. Our framework for services delivery is informed by a feminist perspective, which embraces social justice values, is child focused and culturally sensitive.

About the role:

This is a 22.5 hour per week, contract position which will end on the 30th June 2025.

The key responsibility of this role is to provide support and/or counselling to children who have witnessed and/or experienced domestic and family violence and will also include:

• Delivering age appropriate protective behaviour strategies to children, aimed at encouraging children to identify situations that are unsafe or potentially unsafe and to develop practical strategies to counter these situations.
• Conducting activities with children, either individually or in small group settings, inviting them to focus on issues such as social skills and how to develop and maintain non-violent, respectful and equitable relationships.
• Providing parenting support to mothers including instilling positive parenting practices, educating women on the dynamics of domestic and family violence and how it impacts on children, advising mothers on the developmental stages of children and how to cope with the behaviours of children who have witnessed and/or experienced domestic and family violence.

To be considered for this role, the candidate will need:

• To be female (due to the nature of the services provided by Windana Support Centre Inc, we adopt Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, which enables the service to employ women only on the basis of “genuine occupational requirements”.
• Have a current Blue (Working with Children) Card.
• Possess a current unencumbered driver license.
• A bachelor degree in the behavioural or social sciences with one year's relevant experience or lesser formal qualifications with substantial years of relevant experience - child counselling and therapeutic skills will be considered an advantage.
